Overview

Revenge becomes very personal for Doc Ford, in the stunning new novel by the New York Times-bestselling author.

It was a simple exchange. Clean.
So why did things go so terribly wrong?

It went against all of Ford's instincts. When his goddaughter, Shanay, called one day, he assumed it was with details of her imminent wedding, but the news was anything but cheerful. She and her bridesmaids had thrown a pretty wild bachelorette party, it seemed, on St. Arcs, in the Windward Islands-and someone had secretly videotaped it. Now that person was threatening to blow up her future unless she came across with enough money. "But don't worry, Doc," she said. "I negotiated it down. All I need you to do is make the exchange. Please?"

Ford knew it was a mistake-a mistake to trust the extortionist, a mistake for her not to tell her fiancé-but he agreed. And now one of the bridesmaids is near death. The blackmailer took the money and released the tape on the Internet anyway, and the panicked bridesmaid took an overdose of pills washed down with alcohol.

Fueled by guilt and an overpowering rage, Ford and his friend Tomlinson swear to destroy the person responsible, but she-and it is a woman-has other ideas. An agent of corruption like no one they have ever met, the black widow is just getting started. . . .

"Readers should buckle their seat belts before they crack the covers," the Detroit Free Press said of Hunter's Moon. "This one is a dark and supercharged ride." And so it is again. But nothing will prepare the reader for the twists, the adrenaline, and the sheer intensity of Black Widow.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Ford's 15th Doc Ford thriller (after 2007's Hunter's Moon) may baffle newcomers with a backstory relating to the murder of Ford's parents. Ford, a marine biologist and covert operative who lives on Florida's Sanibel Island, is busy serving his shadowy U.S. government masters by researching the potential use by terrorists of jellyfish and other venomous sea creatures when he receives a desperate appeal for help from an old friend. Shay Money, a successful 26-year-old businesswoman who's about to be married, fears her future happiness is in jeopardy because an extortionist has videotaped her and three female friends in sexually compromising situations. While Ford manages to get the tape in exchange for a sizable payment, his suspicions that the criminal isn't done with Money are soon confirmed. His efforts to protect her lead him to the Caribbean and a sophisticated blackmail racket with a lengthy list of victims. Despite some awkward prose ("The combination of flesh and death, the orderly geometrics of my wound, struck me as indefinably profound"), series fans should enjoy the ride. Author tour. (Mar.)

White's talents shine in black widow.
Kirkus Reviews
Blackmail overshadows Sanibel, Fla., in a way that poses a special set of challenges to marine biologist extraordinaire Doc Ford, making his 15th appearance (Hunter's Moon, 2007, etc.). The smarts of Einstein, the courage of Rambo, the sensitivity of Dr. Phil and the noblesse oblige of Galahad: Marion Ford, as his fans know well, is a man of parts. It's the Galahad part that kick-starts him. Usually, the obligatory lady in distress is leggy, bosomy and a sucker for the Ford charm. This time, however, the lady happens to be Shay Money, his goddaughter. Just before her wedding to rich, handsome, socially prominent, politically ambitious Michael Jonquil, Shay and three of her bridesmaids-to-be decide they owe themselves a bachelorette party at Saint Arc in the Caribbean. As it turns out, Saint Arc is a terrible place to cut loose, and now there's a videotape that demonstrates explicitly how out of hand things can get under tropical skies. Ford's assignment is to persuade a covey of no-goods that extortion has a downside. In Saint Arc, he encounters the customary ration of leggy, bosomy, susceptible ladies, plus a macabre reason to view blackmail in a scary new light. Starts intriguingly, then descends into a welter of aimless episodes, derivative characters and suspense-killing digressions. Fans will be put to the test.

    Black Widow is worthy

4.5 stars. This was my first RWW book, and I found it so thoroughly enjoyable, I read it in one day. Many works of fiction include fact based information, but Black Widow includes history, biology and geography lessons as well. RWW writing skills and imagination are showcased superbly with plot twists that are not all predictable. Don't pick this title up until you know you have several hours all to yourself.

Not deep, but a quick beach read!

This book is a good one to pass the time at an airport or at the beach. I wouldn't be looking for deep answers to the questions of life, but it was pretty entertaining.

Best Doc Ford Mystery in a Long Time

I was originally attracted to the Doc Ford series by such excellent titles as 'Ten Thousand Islands' and 'Shark River', with fast paced story lines that take place in 'Doc Ford country'. Later works tended to be a little over-the-top and/or included too much philosophizing in the narrative. This book is suspenseful, with a more involved story line and less self-analysis. And maybe a little over the top at times also. But a fast read with well drawn characters and a compelling storyline. Highly recommended.

    Ford still runs great

'Black Widow' is another winner in Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford Series. Just before her marriage into a wealthy, socially prominent family, Ford's goddaughter Shay Money is targeted by blackmailers after a particularly wild bachelorette weekend where she may have been drugged and then taped doing shameful things. Ford is enlisted to deliver the hush money, but when he suspects that things won't end there, he takes a trip down to the Caribbean island of St Arc, scene of his goddaughter's unfortunate antics. There, he finds a voodoo priestess who is running the sophisticated blackmail ring that has put more than a few unsuspecting (and rich) women into compromising positions and then bled them of cash. In trying to free Shay from her predicament, Ford teams up with a rakish, older English gentleman who regards himself as a defender of the innocent, not to mention a descendent of the Knights Templar, and may be, like Ford himself, a former special-ops agent. Voodoo priestess? Templar Knights? Sounds hokey, but with White's interesting characters and fast-moving plot it's all great fun. Also recommended: 'A STRANGER LIES THERE' - this mystery won the Malice Domestic Award for best first mystery.

Black Widow is a great book !!!

Once again Randy Wayne White has proven himself to be one of the finest writers. Black Widow is a terrific read and I enjoyed it. The Doc Ford Series just keeps getting better. My advice is to read them all and in the order they were written.

FAMILIAR STORY LINE, BUT DIFFERENT CHARACTER STYLES. OKAY WHEN TIRED OF READING BUSINESS AND SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES FOR ESCAPISM. WISH I COULD DRINK LIKE CHARACTERS DO MY JOB AND FIGHT VILLAINS, AND NOT FEEL HUNG OVER AT 50.

NICE READING FOR SOMETHING ELSE TO DO

Randy White's books are filled with twists and turns - lots of action.

This story could happen to any female and no doubt was based on some similiar incident. White keeps you guessing and trying to stay ahead of the twists and turns. A great, quick read.

    Doc Ford or Nancy Drew?

Randy White has left Florida again and gone island hopping. After reading Black Widow one feels like they are leaving a chick flick. Randy needs to rediscover his roots. His last few don't have his original flavor or zing. Maybe his fame has gone to his head. His website now seems aloof from his readers.

    Convoluted Widow

Not being familiar with the series, I can say that after reading Black Widow I won't be picking up another. Apparently RWW is an acquired taste, I found his writing awkward, the plot confusing, and mostly uninteresting.

    A must read.

The Doc Ford series is an absolute must read. Once I read the first book, I was hooked. And the way the author describes Florida is on the spot. It's even more fun to read when you live in Florida, as I do. Sanibel comes to life in every plot line. I'm still waiting for Ford to stop at Cheeburger, Cheeburger.

    Care in the Caribbean

Mr. White's books always teach a bit of something. This one to take care while in the Caribbean Islands. After living in Jamaica for 2 years, the evils in this book are very real. Plus he teaches about stinging shrimps, jelly fish, and killer whales vs hammerheads. All this while telling a great who done it.

Doc Ford and Randy Wayne White at their best

White has you hook, line, and sinker from the first page. The adventures that he creates for Doc and his friends keep getting better and better with each book he writes. The new characters you meet in Black Widow are some of his best. If you are new to reading Randy Wayne White you will love the previous Doc Ford books and anxious await the next .
