Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anita Lock
Black Americans have been victims of prejudice since the United States was born, but why? This book is one out of eight volumes that are designed, according to the publisher's website, to "help students better understand the prejudices specific minority groups" (in this case, Black Americans), "face, as well as provide them with resources to fight against intolerance and foster understanding."The first chapter answers the question "what is prejudice" by addressing where it begins, explaining discrimination and how that, coupled with prejudice, leads to racism. Chapter two focuses on how prejudice and racism developed throughout the history of slavery in the United States. The third chapter gives a clear picture of what life was like growing up in the American South during the 1960s, as told through one woman's experience. The final chapter centers on ways to fight prejudice. "Find out more" pages filled with book and website resources, a bibliography, a glossary, and an index complete the concluding pages of this book. Seba's thorough research on this topic is also replete with text boxes, photographs, and reproductions of primary resources. Most definitely, not only a must-need book, but also a must-need collection that I highly recommend for middle and high school readers. Reviewer: Anita Lock
