Blackwell Guide to Recorded Country Music

Overview

This is the definitive guide to selecting the finest recordings in country music. Artists such as Garth Brooks and Billy Ray Cyrus outsell established pop and rock giants in the United States, and they are becoming increasingly popular in Europe. Yet this very popularity means that it is now more difficult to define just what 'country music' is. The Guide looks at the key recordings in ten major areas of the music, selecting a main library of 100 discs - the majority of them currently available CDs, but with a ...

The Guide looks at the key recordings in ten major areas of the music, selecting a main library of 100 discs - the majority of them currently available CDs, but with a few harder-to-find specialist items - that should form the core of any country collection. In addition, over 300 supplementary albums are listed and described, enriching the coverage of each style. Crossover artists are discussed (who adapted their styles to the vast pop audience), as are many of the other musicians who can make this vast and relatively uncharted area of music confusing for the first-time buyer and aficionado alike. The Guide alleviates confusion, and charts a clear course through the mass of releases that form the country catalog, past and present.

Blackwell's Guide to Recorded Country Music spotlights the 100 greatest country albums ever recorded, as selected by editor Bob Allen and nine leading country music writers. Each classic album is described in detail, and arranged into one of 10 distinct C & W categories. As a bonus, 300 great supplementary albums are also discussed.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In the latest in this series (e.g., The Blackwell Guide to Recorder Soul Music, LJ 6/1/93), Country Music magazine's Allen does an excellent job of establishing a core collection of country music for the novice buyer. As in earlier volumes, recordings are grouped into general subject categories (e.g., bluegrass) and subcategories (e.g., Texas's Cosmic Cowboys), each containing discographies, annotations for essential albums, and general biographical and/or historical essays. Allen covers the entire history of the genre, from Uncle Dave Macon to Kathy Mattea, taking care to offer balance without downplaying one style for another-although individual essay quality varies. Overall, an excellent acquisition for all popular music collections.-Anthony J. Adam, Prairie View A&M Univ. Lib., Tex.
Booknews
