Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sue C. Kehl, PhD, D (ABMM)(Medical College of Wisconsin)
Description: This is the third edition of a medical microbiology book that consists entirely of clinical case presentations that are classic descriptions of a wide variety of infectious diseases. This volume II includes diseases not covered in volume I.
Purpose: The author has developed the books to address the increasing number of clinical vignette questions on medical examinations. They provide clinical correlation to basic science information, an increasing focus on USMLE.
Audience: The book is intended for medical students studying for the USMLE. The books are also a useful learning tool for any student of medical microbiology or medical technology. Educators may also find them useful as teaching cases.
Features: For each case, the disease presentation, pertinent history, physical examination and laboratory data is presented. Then appropriate gross and microscopic pathologic findings are discussed. The book is designed to be used in conjunction with the USMLE First Aid Series. An atlas of the pathologic findings is also separately available. The book is not intended, nor is it, a reference. The cases highlight "testable" facts.
Assessment: The clinical case presentations present classic descriptions of infectious diseases in a succinct fashion. The section on laboratory findings includes only significant results. A list of differential diagnoses would improve the teaching quality. The discussion only briefly highlights pathogenic mechanisms and could be expanded. There are no references for the interested reader and there is no index to help locate cases for a specific disease.
