Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
"This is Blankie. Blankie comes everywhere with me." A diapered tot narrates this ode to his blanket, explaining how, during the course of a day, his faithful companion multitasks. It watches TV with him, joins him in time-out, doubles as a superhero cape, and comforts him at night. As warm and reassuring as a blankie itself, the board book honors toddlers' emotions with childlike, crayon-bright illustrations and empathetic words. (ages Birth to 2)

Two toddler favorites get their due in a pair of board books by Leslie Patricelli: Binky and Blankie. Bold black outlines and rounded shapes give the pages a reassuring air, even as the toddler hero searches in vain for the title binky, or enumerates all the things one can do with a blankie (including playing superhero). Thick brushstrokes in bright colors provide an alluring backdrop. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

This board book and its companion Binky hit the nail on the head in terms of what is important in a toddler's life. In Blankie, our little one is extolling the virtues of a blankie. A blankie can listen to stories with you, can hide you when you are frightened, and is the perfect buddy for just about everything. The binky is lost and must be found in Binky before our little one can go down for a nap. The bright, primary art is an ideal accompaniment to the no-frills text. These are just right for 1-3 year-olds. 2005, Candlewick Press, Ages 1 to 3.

PreS-Both of these board books feature an adorable, big-headed toddler, with a lone curl on the top of his head and wearing nothing but a diaper. In Binky, the youngster searches for a lost pacifier. In Blankie, the child tells readers about the importance of one's blanket. In both titles, the simple acrylic artwork, done with heavy black outline and set against bold background colors, places the protagonist center stage throughout. Perfect selections for short attention spans.-Sheilah Kosco, Rapides Parish Library, Alexandria, LA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Leslie Patricelli made her board-book debut with the winsome BIG LITTLE, QUIET LOUD and YUMMY YUCKY. BLANKIE and its companion book BINKY make up what the author calls her "attachment series." BLANKIE, she says, "was created as an ode to that beloved item. I wrote it when my son was nearing three, and the narrative voice of the baby reflects that of my son at this age."
