This is one of seven books in the "Billy and Blaze" series. It is an old-fashioned adventure story of a boy and his pony, Blaze. In this particular book, Billy and Blaze go for a ride in the forest and become lost when Billy goes deeper into the woods than he normally would. As storm approaches, and after several unsuccessful attempts at finding his way out, Billy is saved by Blaze who leads him to safety. There's a real sense of danger in the text as Billy and Blaze overcome their fears to find their way back home. Detailed black-and-white pencil drawings accompany each page, and help the reader visualize the adventure and Billy's affection for Blaze. There is a limited amount of text on each large page which makes this book an excellent choice for beginning readers. 2000 (orig. 1950), Aladdin Paperbacks, Ages 6 to 8, $4.99.
