Bleecker Street: Greenwich Village in the 1960's

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kerry Dexter
The stage is set for an evocative and loving tribute to the days of New York's Greenwich Village coffeehouse scene as Jonatha Brooke explores the early morning stillness of "Bleecker Street," first performed by Simon and Garfunkel. With thoughtful covers and inspired performances, this glowing compilation produced by songwriter Peter Gallway passes the torch from the first folk revival to today's crop of singer/songwriters. In the 1960s, Bleecker Street was a crossroads, a mecca, a meeting place for artists making a new folk music of vibrant political and personal statements. Bob Dylan, John Sebastian, Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, and others swapped tunes and stories along ...

Bob Dylan, John Sebastian, Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, and others swapped tunes and stories along the street while building a path for future generations. In the '90s, a new generation takes their work to heart. Marshall Crenshaw offers one of Dylan's more personal songs, "My Back Pages," while Loudon Wainwright III and Iris Dement team up to revisit Richard and Mimi Fari&ntilda;a's "Pack Up Your Sorrows." Thirty years lends perspective to Eric Anderson's vignette of the weary political crusaders of the era, "Thirsty Boots," insightfully delivered by John Gorka, while Paul Brady catches the optimism of the times in "Let's Get Together." Chrissie Hynde, Patty Larkin, and Beth Nielsen Chapman are among those who continue, in Dylan's lyric, to "use my ideas as maps" and reimagine these classics for a new audience.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Bleecker Street: Greenwich Village in the '60s traces and tributes the bohemian Mecca's part in the emergence of singer/songwriters and the folk revival during the '60s. The initial passion and sense of discovery in this music remains undimmed, as politically and emotionally conscious songs by Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Tim Buckley, Judy Collins, and Paul Simon are reinterpreted by contemporary artists like Chrissie Hynde, Ron Sexsmith, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and many others.
