Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In a story with a familiar theme, Santa's Christmas Eve ride is almost doomed until his helpers pitch in to guarantee a happy ending. In this case, Santa develops a head cold. Everyone says "Bless you, Santa" and finally puts him to bed. The reindeer, Santa's cat and a variety of other helpful animals finish making and wrapping all the toys—and cleaning up all the messes created by Santa's huge sneezes. By the time Santa awakens from his long nap, he is feeling better and the sleigh is loaded and ready to fly. This is not a particularly clever or appealing re-telling of a common holiday story. The illustrations are simple and colorful but are also not especially original. 2004, Tiger Tales, Ages 3 to 7.
—Karen Leggett
School Library Journal
PreS-When Santa starts sneezing on December 23, he tries to soldier on, but is finally put to bed with hot tea and medicine, while his cat, various reindeer, and an owl clean up the workshop and get all of the toys wrapped and packed. Will Santa be well in time to make his rounds? Of course he will, and when he returns, he has presents for all of his animal helpers. The illustrations are bright and clean and will carry well with large groups, and audiences will gleefully chime in with the "achoooos!" A treat for holiday storytimes.-M. A. Sykes and Warnes team up for their second story about a Santa who makes all the Christmas toys with the help of his animal companions rather than elves. On December 23rd, Santa wakes up with a horrid cold and is unable to finish the toys for Christmas Eve delivery. His huge sneezes, illustrated with "ACHOOOO!" in flowing display type, are large enough to knock over the completed toys, so Santa's pet cat and mouse tuck him into bed and finish all the toys with the help of the other animals. Santa makes a quick recovery and is able to deliver the toys on Christmas Eve, just as his cat starts to come down with the cold. Preschoolers will enjoy the humor of the huge sneezes, though they may wonder what happened to Santa's elves and why he only has four reindeer instead of eight. Warnes provides cheerful illustrations full of bold colors and bright patterns, and he has a humorous way with his animal characters, including the tiny but expressive mouse and the cat who wears a headband with star antennae.
