Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Twins Devra and David Levy and their baby brother enact 13 tableaux, each typifying an occasion for offering a particular Hebrew prayer--waking up, eating different foods, celebrating a holiday and so forth. Facing pages contain the prayers themselves, rendered in Hebrew, translated in non-sexist language and transliterated; a variety of borders heightens the visual interest and contributes a folksy feeling. For example, opposite a picture of the twins making challah is the prayer for bread, bordered with lines of braided dough and vignettes showing wheat growing in the fields. Some fluency in Jewish tradition is helpful--the picture illustrating a blessing for parents is simply bizarre unless you understand the clues marking it as a Purim scene, and there's neither glossary nor guide to the transliteration system What's the difference between the ``ch'' in ``chessed'' and the ``kh'' in ``melekh''? Are the vowels short or long?. Edwards also goes a little too far in establishing the homeliness of her settings--the children's pudgy bodies, their unattractive features and their crudely exaggerated mouths are off-putting. Ages 3-up. Mar.
Ilene Cooper
Edwards presents a collection of 13 traditional Hebrew prayers, ranging from the "Modeh Ahnee", a prayer of thanksgiving for the morning, to the "Sh'ma", which states the belief in one God. There are also prayers for peace, upon seeing the wonders of the universe, for joyous occasions. The book is handsomely designed, with each prayer (in Hebrew, in English, and in transliteration), wrapped in a border that depicts some aspect of the prayer, facing a picture of children finding God's magnificence in everyday events. But there are several problems with the art. Though Edwards identifies her characters as children in her author's note, in some of the pictures the older brother and sister look like parents to their baby brother, and that may initially confuse readers. Moreover, the family is "nebbish"-like in appearance, almost bordering on stereotype, and this detracts from the otherwise appealing scenes that illustrate the power of the prayers. Edwards' translations are those she uses with her own children. Literal translations can be found in other, traditional prayer books.
