Carla stared at the synthetic leather bag in her trunk for several moments as she pushed back the urge to cry at her recent luck. She was exhausted, jobless, and manless. Oddly enough, it was the first fact that truly irritated her. She'd stayed up the night before working on the same nanobot that Brian had leaked to her competition. She was tired and had nothing to show for it.

She grabbed the bag and pressed the full pad of her thumb against the small concave metal indentation next to the brake lights. She turned and walked away from the vehicle, knowing that the moment she stepped from it, the trunk would close on its own.

"Welcome, Carla," Bionic Barbie, the gym's female personality, said once Carla's retina was scanned. "Please note that the California redwood forest route is back in session," Barbie murmured as Carla stepped through the sliding glass doors.

Things are looking up already, Carla thought as the notice about her favorite exercise screen settled. She usually biked or ran with the fully interactive screen when she worked out. She'd been disappointed the last two times she'd come to the gym. They'd yet to fix the problem. But Carla's buoyed spirits didn't last long, as she had miscalculated just how many people would feel the need to workout on Valentine's Day.

The gym wasn't packed, but it sure as hell wasn't empty.

She strode through the spacious first level with the kind of confidence that came from knowing people were watching for all the wrong reasons. To make matters worse she had no way to make the reasons the right ones.

There was no way to make her imperfections perfect. Cosmetic surgery was not an option. Although it wouldchange what people saw on the outside, it wouldn't change how she felt. It wouldn't make her any less of an outsider, at least in her own mind. In a world that valued absolute beauty, Carla understood that she stood out like a sore thumb.

She kept her gaze in front of her, determined to ignore any of the prying eyes she could feel roaming over her face, but a handsome man about her age caught her eye. He had all the right reasons for someone's gaze to snap to him. Unlike her, his family had been financially secure enough to afford the obstetricians who did genetic tests on embryos to make sure that they were not only healthy and free of diseases, but perfect. At least, physically.

His face was a lovely statement to the biologic arts with its perfect symmetrical lines, full lips, light eyes, and square jaw. She turned the minute his gaze settled upon hers, striding to the private room she rented for her workouts. The last thing she needed was to be surrounded by beauty she could not touch.

Ten minutes into her run, someone opened the door to her private room. Her concentration was immediately shattered. "Off," she muttered to the machine as she turned around and promptly lost her breath. Two of the most beautiful men she'd ever seen stood in the doorway staring down at her.

Whereas the man she'd spotted on the way to her private room had snagged her attention, these men held it hostage. There was something about the men that left her sexually helpless. Their beauty was so erotic, so sensually mesmerizing, she had to actively remind herself they had intruded on her and were not worthy of attention.

And even though the pain of Brian's betrayal was fresh in her mind, Carla couldn't help looking over the two men standing before her. The darker of the two stood closer to her, and she couldn't deny the feeling he wanted to get closer. There was something in his tense movements that made her think he was just waiting to jump her.

Not that she would have minded.

He was tall, standing about six and half feet, and every inch of his long body was filled with muscles. Muscles upon muscles. His hair was a midnight color, too long and too dark to be fashionable. But on him it was devastating. He reminded her of those lone rangers from the ancient western films she liked to watch late at night.

But his best qualities lay in the perfect harmony of his masculine face. With his dark slash of eyebrows; strong, slightly crooked aquiline nose; and wide, full mouth, he was the epitome of every woman's dangerous lover.

The second man was just as tall as the dark one, but that was where all comparison ended. He was just as tempting, but where the brunet was enticing darkness, his friend was pure light.

The lighter toned of the two men had short, pale blond hair that just barely reached his ears. Whereas his friend's features were harshly hewn, his face was a testament of meticulous care with high cheekbones, lush Cupid's bow lips, and large, shocking blue eyes.

And his body was just as chiseled, just as muscular as his friend's.

She couldn't help thinking the duo must have one hell of a workout plan.

With a start, Carla realized they were standing still, accepting her wanton perusal without batting an eye. She wiped her arm across her profusely sweaty face. She grimaced when she realized they were watching her every move and no doubt saw the endless stream of moisture oozing from her pores.

She looked like hell.

She eyed the two men for a moment as she licked her lips. "This is a private room," she threw over her shoulder as she grasped the pseudo-cotton towel on the treadmill's arm and wiped her face.

"We're sorry about the ... interruption."

Despite herself, Carla turned around. There was something about the man's tone that pricked her senses, daring her to figure out why the two men made her curious when even Brian had not stirred the ball of fire burning deep in her gut. Something in his tone called to her sex.

She turned fully around. Wicked silver gray eyes caught hers. "Can I ask you why you work out alone?"

She stiffened at the inquisitive tone and prying words. "You can ask, but that doesn't mean I have to answer."

"You should not hide your beauty from us," the blond murmured softly.

She snorted and pointed to the door. "You can leave now!" She fairly yelled the words, shocked by the intensity of her emotions, the dark tone of her voice. Too late, Carla realized she had been hanging on by a thread the whole day, and the blond's words had cut through the last strand holding her together. It had been scarring enough to find that Brian had pretended to be attracted to her. And Brian's attractiveness was not even on the same scale as the two men staring down at her.

The brunet threw the blond a quelling glance before turning to her. "We're sorry. We did not mean to offend you. We are just at a loss for words. We have never seen a woman quite like you. We are ... intrigued."

She folded both arms under her breasts. She'd been through this before. There was always some man interested in trying out the exotic, the unknown, and there was little more unusual than a five-feet-two-inch woman. "I refuse to be your spectacle."

The blond took a step toward her. She froze the moment his foot hit the ground. She watched him, helpless to do anything more. Carla couldn't find the strength to move, even though her mind was screaming at her to stop him before he did something. Like touch her.

He stood less than a foot away from her, looking down at her with soulful blue eyes. They seemed to look right through her, peer deep inside her core. She watched the slow rise of his hand. It rose in a tentative motion as though she was an anxious animal he did not want to overwhelm. Or maybe that was how she felt.

Long, callused fingers captured her face. Holding her jaw. Threading through the baby fine hairs beside her ear. His gaze held hers in its tight grip. "You are not a spectacle. You are a vision, one any man would be happy to hold ... own ... love."

She stared up at him in shock, unable to form words. Seared by the emotion in his gaze, the intensity of his words, and the dark lust in his tone.

His thumb brushed across her mouth, and she found herself parting her lips for him. Calluses caressed her bottom lip sending heat through her core. His finger started to venture into her mouth, only to stop just at the entrance. "Later," he whispered before pivoting on one heel and walking toward the brunet. Just as the blond reached the darker man, the brunet lifted his silver eyes to her. The smoldering heat there seared her to her soul. They held one another's gaze for a moment. It was broken when the brunet turned and followed the blond out the door.

She stared at the door for several moments feeling the heat of the blond's touch across every inch of her body. She licked her lips and tasted him on her tongue.

Carla stared at the door the men had walked out of. It took her a moment to garner the strength to turn back to the treadmill. She could not help hearing the blond's "Later" with every step she ran.
