0345 HOURS

Bodies littered the top of the wall. Rankin stumbled over them as he moved about, dragging his injured leg. Breath rasping in his throat, he struggled against the pain.

He reloaded and replaced his own weapons in strategic positions, then gathered swords and spears from the fallen enemy. Finally he sat, panting, to give attention to his injured leg. Blood continued to seep from the crude bandage he'd tied about the wound. With a grimace of pain, he pulled the knot tighter. It would have to do.

The Boxers came again, this time accompanied by the blaring of trumpets. As before, he fired until his weapons were empty, then waded into them, engaging in hand to hand combat. A sword slashed him from behind, leaving a long gouge in his back.

Thrusting a rifle forward, a Boxer fired without aiming. The bullet slammed into Rankin's right side, just above the belt. His breath left him with the force of the blow. He grabbed a Boxer by the throat to keep from falling, swinging the smaller Chinese around as a shield. A spear pierced the man's back and lodged. Rankin threw the dying Boxer aside, the movement wresting the spear from the hands of its wielder. An arrow whistled out of the darkness, piercing Rankin's left shoulder.

He cried out, the pain overwhelming him. He fell onto his back, fully expecting the Chinese spears to pin him there like some helpless insect. Yet, once again the Boxers faded back into the night.
