Boom Studios is perhaps the best of the smaller comic book studios currently in operation. Their titles are predominately sci-fi and horror with splashes of comedy thrown in for good measure. Being a fan of Warhammer and Warhammer40K, I was naturally drawn to these titles and found them to be a mixed batch. Some are better than others. I prefer the way Dan Abnett deals with the 40K setting, and "Blood and Thunder" is by far my favorite of those titles. Though told from the perspective of an Imperial Guardsman, it is an Ork story.
The Orks are easily the most amusing of the 40K races, violent and bloodthirsty but unwittingly comical as well. Abnett treats them with a high level of respect, from their particular brand of speech, to their natural tendency toward betraying one another, to their love of giant machines of war. The dialogue is entertaining, and the story begins with a battle big enough to be the climax of your average story, but quickly escalates the action to GARGANTuan proportions, and from there things somehow get even bigger.
The great majority of the artwork is well rendered and well suits the 40K world. The original cover artwork from the series is also included in this trade paperback and it too is nice to look at.
I cannot imagine the Warhammer 40K fan who would not enjoy this ride.
