Overview

Welcome to the nightmare . . .

There is a world you don't know about, inhabited by supernatural creatures of darkness—vampires, werewolves, and all manner of savage, impossible beasts that live for terror and slaughter and blood. They are all around us but you cannot see them, for knowledge of their presence—so close and so hungry—would surely drive any ordinary human insane.

But for centuries a special breed of hunter has kept the monsters at bay, preventing them from breaking through the increasingly fragile barriers protecting our mortal realm.

These guardians are called skinners.

But beware . . . for there are very few of them left.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Imagine a world in which malevolent supernatural creatures walk invisibly in our midst. If these monsters of the dark were exposed even for a moment to our view, we would go insane or fall victim to paralyzing fear. Imagine that for centuries, the only protection against these hungry fiends has been provided by special hunters called "Skinners," a breed of heroes who seem to be going extinct. And then, at fiction's safe distance, immerse yourself in the world of Marcus Pelegrimas's violent vampire-with-a-twist series.
Publishers Weekly

Seattle video game designer Cole Warnecki takes an extreme vacation in British Columbia and ends up hunting supernatural monsters in this campy, action-packed paranormal debut. After Cole survives an encounter with a nasty werewolflike Full Blood, he lands a job with the Midwestern Ectological Group, whose Skinners act as cops for the local supernatural population. They bring him to Chicago and pair him up with experienced Skinner Paige Strobel, who gives him sound advice like "Don't gawk at a woman's ass when she's carrying a shotgun." Paige drags Cole into the front lines of MEG's war on insane vampire Misonyk, who infects people with vampiric spores and encourages them to drain victims dry, stealing their souls. Plenty of cinematic gore and wisecracks will keep readers coming back for future installments. (Feb.)

Chapter One

Seattle, Washington

"What the hell is that thing supposed to be?"

Cole Warnecki squinted and leaned forward as he tried to come up with words to describe what he was seeing on the monitor. Drawing a complete blank, he shook his head and replied, "I don't know. Some sort of monster?"

The man next to Cole didn't take his eyes from the thing that had caught his attention. He shook his head, but not in the vaguely bewildered way that Cole had a second ago. "A monster or maybe some kind of alien?"

Cole snapped his fingers. "A demon! That's what it is."

"What kind of demon?"

"The kind that . . . wait a second . . . maybe it's some sort of guardian spirit."

Jason Sorrenson shifted his eyes away from the thirty-two-inch screen, swiveled in his chair so he could face Cole, then reached for a pair of glasses. He slid the dated wire frames into the grooves they'd worn over both ears and onto the bridge of his nose before asking, "Isn't this your game, Cole? Shouldn't you know exactly what every one of these things are?"

Cole kept looking at the monitor and the image frozen on it. In his hands he held a controller that was connected to a black video-game console on a table beside Jason's desk. Finally, Cole set the controller down and pressedhis fingertips against his closed eyes. "Shit, you're right. You know how crazy things get when we're this close to going gold."

"Going gold? We're barely through play testing and you think we're ready to start manufacturing disks?"

Letting out a breath, Cole flinched as if someone had just blown pepper up his nose. "A Cerberus! That's what it is!"

"What?"

"You know, like one of those demon dogs from Greek mythology. But it's different than those other ones that showed up in—"

"Save it, Cole." Jason was in his mid-forties, but carried himself as if he had sixty years of grief on his back. Leaning back, he sunk into the expensive padding of his chair, clasped his hands behind his balding head and stared at Cole through the dated wire frame glasses. His office matched the chair in comfort and had enough windows to fill it with whatever light the gray Seattle skies could offer. In comparison, the rest of the offices in the building seemed like dungeons. Outside, a stiff breeze blew in from Puget Sound; all the bare branches in the nearby park swayed in a slow rhythm. Winter hadn't arrived quite yet, but the city looked plenty cold already. "What's going on with you lately?" Jason asked with more concern than might be expected from someone so high on the corporate ladder.

Cole was about ten years younger than his boss, but he let out a sigh as if he was the older of the two. Working his way through the ranks of Digital Dreamers Inc. had been a labor of love, but times like this didn't feel so romantic. "I don't know," he said before his pause became uncomfortable.

"Do you want to abandon Hammer Strike?"

Glancing back to the monitor, Cole looked at the pause screen displaying the game's title and options. "I've been working on Hammer for over two years. Giving it up now would just be . . ."

"Lazy?"

"I was going to say stupid, but I guess both are pretty close."

Jason got up and sat on the edge of his marble desktop. "I'd hate to lose you, Cole," he said while picking up his own controller and hitting a button to put the game back into motion. "You're anything but lazy, but you do seem sort of distracted."

"That's putting it nicely. It feels more like I've had my head jammed up my ass."

Chuckling under his breath like a preteen boy too nervous to follow up his friend's swearing with a bad word of his own, Jason let his fingers drift effortlessly over the game controller. He moved his muscle-bound, onscreen avatar to one of the Cerberus-type creatures and used the titular hammer to pound it into a mess of pixilated gore.

Cole pinched his chin between a thumb and forefinger while watching Jason maneuver through the game. "Do that combo I showed you."

"The killing move?"

"Yeah."

Jason's fingers flew through the prescribed set of motions, causing the digitized character to perform a jerky dance. "It's not working," he said while shaking his head.

Cole took the controller from Jason's hands and went through the same motions, only a bit faster. After a few more attempts, he bounced the controller off the floor and turned his back to the screen. "God dammit!"

"Maybe you need to take a vacation. You know . . . relax a little?"

"I can't take a vacation this close to the release date."

"So we'll push the date back. It wouldn't be the first time."

Letting out a breath, Cole straightened up and turned around to face his boss again. He knew he might not have been in the best shape of his life, but with his natural athleticism, he held up better than most guys his age. Considering how much time he spent in front of a computer screen, his lack of a gut was even more impressive. He chuckled at his own expense and dropped back into his chair. "I don't think a vacation is what I need, Jason."

"I'm not letting you quit." Lighting up like the power button on his game console, Jason said, "I know! What about Nora?"

"I haven't seen her for a while."

"She works one door away from the programmers' lounge. You must see her every day."

"I mean I haven't seen her . . . like that. Not for a while."

Jason nodded slowly. "Why not?"

"Not just a boss, but a relationship counselor too? I think you should prescribe me some painkillers. You know, the good ones that put you to sleep for a while?"

Like watching a movie with Non-stop action!!

First book I read from this author and it was really good. A different twist to the creatures we already know: vampires, werewolves, etc.
The action is non-stop and the creatures just keep on coming... I really had a lot of respect for Cole and Paige at the end of this adventure. I'm really looking forward to book 2 of the series.

    Good start for the series.

This book was a great read! I read some of the other reviews that didn't give this book enough credit and I have to disagree.
This book is a perfect start for a series. It doesn't give away every thing right from the begining. As the main character learns about the situations and other characters so do you. This book is very entertaining and also allows for allot of growth throughout the rest of the series. The hero of the book doesn't go from zero to hero in three pages, as this book ends he is still the new guy on the block with allot to learn.

    Bloody Good Violence and Mayhem

This book was very fast paced with a linear but interesting plot. If you like bloody encounters involving werewolves and vampires, then you'll probably like this story.

    Blood Blade is a HIT!

As an avid reader, I unfortunately or fortunately judge books by their covers... This cover caught my eye and I quickly snatched it up. I read the back cover and decided to purchase it... It was a very good purchase. The storyline was interesting, and flowed easily. The characters were likable and I felt at ease with them immediately. The book was a fast read because it had no slowness to it. It started interesting, flowed well, and closed interesting. I look forward to reading book two in the very near future.

Skinners, shapechangers, and vampires...what more could you ask for?

There are so many books about shapechangers and vampires that one has to wonder what now. Yet, this book does offer a different twist to the combination which is compelling. The interaction of the characters results for quick and interesting reading. A different twist...read it.

    Pretty Good

This is a very well written book. He is a very good writer. The book is in 3rd person but the way he writes it you hardly notice, he makes you still feel as if you're actually there. It is action packed from beginning to end. It definately keeps you interested. I finished it in a few days. I recommend this to any supernatural fan.

    Supreme Supernatural Slickness!

Cole Warnecki... He's he kind of heros us geeks tend to identify with. A man who's only somewhat comfortable in the world he lives in is suddenly thrust into a supernatural adventure that knows no bounds. Can it get better? Of course it can! Meet Paige Strobel. She's every geek's dream come true. A girl that can kick the snot out of creatures straight out of your worst nightmares and still have the ability to crack jokes right after. Tough. Exciting. Beautiful. Cole's going to have his hands full.

Marcus Pelegrimas spins a tale of high adventure laced with so much down to earth reality that you almost feel like you should lock your windows while you read his books. This author has hit a home run with the Skinner's series! I purchased the first one on a lark (admittedly due to I liked the cover art originally). After I started reading, I found I couldn't put it down. The next day I immediately went online and purchased the rest of the series then unhappily waited until they arrived.

Trust me when I tell you that if you're looking for a book series with instantly likable characters, supernatural creatures that seem so believably real you almost want to look online to see if they exist and a story that will have you turning pages until you fingers cramp then this is the series for you!

Gritty Urban Fantasy at its Best!

I picked up Blood Blade on a whim and I'm glad I did! The action is almost non-stop and has the feel of a well done action movie. It's easy to sympathize with Cole. How would any of us react after finding out the monsters under the bed are real? Paige is hard scrabble and tough with enough glimmers of softness to be fully dimensional. The book is so well written that it's not hard for the reader to believe that events in the book could be for real.

A book for all facets of nerdism...

Buy it. Read it. Love it. It's what I did. Satisfied me on many nerd levels - gamer nerd, horror nerd, sci-fi nerd, Midwest nerd. Yes. I have a nerd level referred to as "Midwest nerd." It's the part of me that gets a little excited when a book, movie, or whatever takes place in the Midwest. Especially when in my birthstate of Wisconsin. The only nerd facet that wasn't addressed in this book is the music nerd. But I've been assured by Pelegrimas himself that the itch of my music nerd will be scratched in the third book. Awesome. If you share the same nerd facets as me, read this book. You won't regret it.

    A MUST READ!!!!!

If you like dark seedy "gentleman's clubs" sprinkled with Nymphs and blood craving vampires. Very smart Humor sprinkled between very gory imagery this book is for you. Blood Blade is one of the BEST books I have read in a loooong time. M.Pelegrimas has become my favorite author and I am always on the look out for more of his writings. Pick this up and be prepared to fall in love with it. Oh and PAIGE is HOT!!

So glad I picked this one up!

While the frightening prologue of Blood Blade made me question if I could handle dipping my toe into the urban fantasy/horror genre, I was pleasantly surprised by this book's creativity, humor, and fast pace.

I found the human characters to be likeable and real, not afraid to show their vulnerability but compelled to put the colorful, supernatural creatures in their place. Pelegrimas set a pace that kept me going and clearly answered my - and the characters' - questions with good timing. His wisecracks and occasional sarcasm kept me entertained. I'm looking forward to the second installment in this series and am eager to see where Pelegrimas takes this ongoing battle!

"Crazy but effective," Walter said with a shake of his head. "That's a Skinner for ya." (p. 278)

    Incredible book!

This is a wonderful book, mixes so many different ideas so well and very entertaining. His use of imagery is incredible, my heart starts beating faster and my adrenaline pumps during the fight scenes. My fiance and I love the dorky love scenes between the two main characters, they remind us so much of ourselves at those parts.

    Bloody Good Story!

Watch out Buffy. Move over Van Helsing. Their's a new type of slayer in town. In Marcus Pelegrimas' breakout novel for this series, "Blood Blade", he introduces a new kind of hunter of the undead and other supernatural creatures out for blood: Skinners. Unlike his predecessors Pelegrimas permits a view of a new kind of vampire that is not allergic sunlight, doesn't shrink away from crosses, and could bathe in holy water. Don't worry though, the vampires aren't lacking in their thirst for blood! These bloodthirsty creatures are being herded by a master vampire (Misonyk) who has visions and plans to forward his domination and power. An unlikely hero is presented in Cole, a video game designer, who is thrust into this world of unbelievable horror and violence while on a vacation. With the help of Paige, a Skinner, he is trained and given the tools to battle the forces of evil threatening to take over our world. The intense action and fight scenes are fantastic and the characters are believeable with a sense of humor. Twilight fans, this may be too intense for you but if you're looking for a new spin on vampires this is the ticket. It's just the beginning for this series and it looks to be successful. A++

    Tasty

I found the 3rd Skinners book and got a good feeling about it, so I decided to read the first before it. I was very pleased. I love Werewolves and vampires, just not the Twilight crap. Pelegrimas has created his own mythology and it is phenomenal. I had a hard time putting Blood Blade down. Can't wait to read the others in the series.

    1st in a New Series

I really enjoyed Blood Blade, I love Cole, here you have a guy that designs video games and he decides to take one of those extreme vacations and comes face to face with a real life monster that kills everyone that is unlucky enough to be caught by it. Most guys would have fainted or run the other way, but Cole gave 100% even when he was petrified. When he meets Paige and decides to go into training to become a skinner, I fell a little bit more in love with him. Skinners fight monsters and protect everyday humans from knowing they exist among us. Cole was used to sitting in front of a computer and on his couch. The only monsters he was used to seeing were in a game, not trying to kill him or eat him.

I found Paige very likeable and she kicks some major butt and she watches out for everything. Cole seems to get distracted to easy. I got a real good laugh out of the vampire in the sun thing when Cole pushed one girl vampire into the sunlight and she smirks at him and begins to mock him because the sun isn't bothering her at all.

I think I will dream about Henry for some time to come and not in a good way, but in my nightmares, since Henry was still around at the end of Blood Blade, perhaps I will meet up with him again in Howling Legion.

This book was amazing. I didn't totally understand what was really going on until about half way through my first reading of this book. But if you like vampires, werewolves, or just monsters in general, I would recommend this book to you!

    Blood Blade

Blood Blade was hard to get into. After about a 3rd of the book, it got better. It's one of those "don't give up on" books.

Great Fantasy Story with a New Perspective

This story is about Cole Warneki, game developer. He is having a hard time working on his current project and thinks an extreme hunting trip will help him out. He flies to Canada in a trashed plane, rides in a pick up truck for several hours, and when he gets to the warm cabin in the middle of no where, is attacked. Two of his traveling companions tries to fight off a Full Blood while Cole tries to help. He is the only survivor and is sent off to tell the story to a Paige.

Cole then learns that vampires, Nymars, and werewolves, Full Bloods and Half Blood cousins, are real and that Skinner's try to keep the balance between them and the humans. Nymars are actually a spore that attaches to the heart of the victim and werewolves and Mongrels change form to one extent or another. While Full Bloods are pure werewolves and Half Blood are the result of humans being bitten. Mongrels are other shifters.

But there is a powerful Nymar, Misonyk, that is trying to rally the Nymars together to take over the supernatural and ultimately the human communities. With his pet, Henry, a creature of mixed blood that is being used as a big club to keep the other Nymars in line. It is up to Cole and Paige, a Skinner, to stop the uprising, protect human, and not get killed themselves.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It starts out with the gaming community, which I'm not all that fond of, and then the hunting trip to get straightened out was nothing that interested me. But as soon as the first Full Blood attacked, I was hooked. You don't learn what everything is right away, which worked out great with the story. I also felt sorry for Henry.

I recommend this to those that like the fantasy/vampire/werewolves stories. This has a great new perspective, keeps you wanting more, and has great action. I cannot wait for the next book.
