I heard about this book on facebook. I was a little skeptical at first considering the "Vampire Craze" right now, but was sorely mistaken. Now mind you, it does focus on Vampires but there are other hidden agendas in it that I love. There is an undertone to the book that you could miss if you're not paying attention. You get carried away in the dialogue, action, suspense, and uncertainty of the characters. You will NOT want to put this down. I finished the book in a day and a half and am EAGERLY awaiting the next installment. This author is spectacular and will have you begging for more.

Blood Born is good enough to become as popular as a Sookie Stackhouse book, but it would be tough to consider it merely a commercial venture. It holds its integrity as it paints a sweeping picture of some parts of traditional vampire lore combined with concepts that seem entirely new. Also different is the setting. no bayou or European city. Instead a particularly racially diverse, northeastern/mid-atlantic city with poor, middle class, and wealthy sections and people depicted. My favorite aspect of the book is the complex relationships the characters have with each other, their allies, enemies, "species," and even their own consciences. The spirituality in Blood Born is presented in a new way that I really appreciate as well. I don't want to say too much about the particulars, because the pleasure is in anticipating what's to come on the next page. I give it 4 stars out of 5 only because it's so compelling i'd like to see perhaps even more fleshing out of certain characters. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

"Blood Born" by Larry Miller seduces you into the world of the vampire and thrills to the very last gasp...I mean page! What seduces you? Power? Go on, be greedy. Take it. Great mystery? Keep turning those pages. Beauty and Perfection? I should be so lucky! Sex and romance? OMG. twice! Jesse Ross takes it all and finds that he's special. He's the Prodigy. Is the price too high? Skillfuly blending adventure, mystery, intelligent writing and gasp! moments...Blood Born is truly a spectacular read. I want more! Hurry up with the sequel!

As I understand it, this is the first of a trilogy of novels. The hero of the story, Jesse Ross has these creepy, very detailed dreams about vampires. He doesn't know why. The dreams increase. Then he finds out vampires are real and they want him to become one of them. The reasons why are the meat of the story. Jesse is The Prodigy, a vampire who has all of this power and is destined to bring the Long Night, essentially the enslavement of humanity. The real creepy thing about this book is the veneer of reality that overlays everything. I actually thought this quoted scholar in the book, Dr. Dale Lockwood was real. Worth the read. I can't wait until the second installment.
