Meet the Author

After spending too many years as an industrial engineer, Shannon learned to write from her husband, bestselling author Jim Butcher. She learned writing craft in order to help him with his stories, but found the idea of writing her own too compelling to resist. She lives in Missouri with her husband and son, where conversations at the dinner table are more often about things someone made up than about anything that’s actually happened. Feel free to contact Shannon via her website.

Another good book of the series. You can see who future books will be about and that is good to read.

Because the series itself is so captivating, I had very high expectations for this fifth installment. The main character (Logan) possessed an alluringly unique perspective from Ms. Butcher's previous four heroes that I absolutely craved to understand "this other race". Ms. Butcher pleasantly delivered in this regard (as best she could at this point in the series). I tend to enjoy books that are emotionally-charged, yet possess a clean, crisp plot with high-stakes intrigue. This book contained all those ingredients but, sadly, bordered on the convoluted. Interwoven within the main plot nestled a plethora of subplots all "gearing up" that if you (the reader) aren't familiar with the history of these characters would have been lost. I, who have followed the series from it's inception, merely held on. I understood that groundwork was being laid for future stories, but it was overwhelming. At times, I "popped out" of the story because of some break in the main plot, and I, as a reader, don't like that at all. This series is fantastic in concept; the characters amazingly tormented yet inherently strong. I FEEL for them all, and that's why this series siphons me back. But this book did not match the caliber of Ms. Butcher's previous four. The writing style is top-notch, the outer threads of the story lines, however, were just a tad bit too....much.

This was a great switch in the series. It was nice to see Logan as a hero, and not a villian.

Books dont come out fast enough! There are so many couples/questions to answer. Its a bit frustrating. Good book 4 stars.

She arrived out of nowhere naked in body and mind. Sister Olive took in Hope Serrien who, though she still lacks her memory of her past, now helps the homeless starting with reading auras. Hope searches for a missing woman. However, in Kansas City, Missouri, her quest is interrupted when she steps into the middle of a Synestrian demon attack; her blood saves Logan Athar the Sanguinar demon fighter. However, as she rescued his body, she ruins his well being because he wants her as his but she can never belong to him. She has no time to adapt to the paranormal as Krag the Synestrian lord wants to drain Hope while Logan vows to protect her. Krag captures the pair whose love for each other is their only hope for escape. The fifth Sentinel Wars (see Living Nightmare and Running Scared) is a great urban fantasy starring the enigmatic Logan and the woman who saves his life. Loaded with action and with a deeper understanding of the war between the Synestrian and the Sanguinar, Shannon K. Butcher moves forward the overarching theme but also provides an engaging romance that enhances the paranormal story line. Although newcomers will have some problems diving into the world of Ms. Butcher without reading the previous entries, fans of the saga will appreciate this powerful tale. Harriet Klausner
