Biography

The vampire genre has enthralled readers ever since Bram Stoker introduced a certain Transylvanian count over a century ago. Since then vampires have been used as vehicles for everything from romantic novels to erotica to humor to the expected tales of terror. However, very few writers have combined all of these facets of the never-say-die vampire quite the way that Laurell K. Hamilton has.

Hamilton has not always been under the spell of undead things that go bump-and-grind in the night. When she was a young girl, her literary tastes were a bit more on the traditional side. "I wanted to be Louisa May Alcott, who wrote Little Women, because I had never read any science fiction, fantasy, or horror," she confessed in a podcast on Mayor Slay.com. "Then at 13 or 14 I found Robert E. Howard's short story collection [Pigeons From Hell]. It was the first horror, the first heroic fantasy, the first science fiction I'd ever read, and the moment I read that I knew that not only did I want to be a writer, but this is what I wanted to write."

Furthering Hamilton's burgeoning fascination with the fantastic, she discovered Anthony Masters's The Natural History of the Vampire at her high school library. Coupled with the ghost stories her grandmother had told her when she was a child and heavy doses of Hammer Horror movies from Great Britain, Hamilton was well on her way to creating a character that would only be rivaled by Buffy in the field of vampire slaying.

Hamilton first introduced vampire huntress Anita Blake in her third novel Guilty Pleasures. Blake is an unlikely combination of action hero, federal marshal, "necromancer," and lusty dame. Her exploits between the sheets and in the graveyard won Hamilton a rabid following hungry for something new in the well-traveled vampire genre.

Along with the kinds of scares normally associated with vampire stories, Hamilton's books are notable for their unflinching eroticism. Vampires have had a sexual lure since Stoker, but Hamilton particularly draws that aspect to the surface of her work as one of her creatures might draw blood from a victim. "I [want] a kiss to be so believable it gives the reader shivers," she says on her website. "Two things I do well are sex and violence, but I don't want gratuitous sex or violence. The sex and violence is only as graphic as need be. And never included unless it furthers the plot or character development."

Another unlikely trait of her books is humor, vampire tales classically being of the more solemn sort. However, a writer weaned on a book titled Pigeons From Hell is not likely going to shy away from wit. Consequently, her books have been consistently entertaining and fun, as well as creepy and sexy.

Hamilton has also brought her delicious combination of sex, humor, and frights to another series, this one more ingrained in dark fantasy than horror. Her faerie princess/P.I. Meredith Gentry made her debut in Kiss of Shadows in 2001 and has since sparked her own crowd-pleasing sword and sorcery meets pulp series.

Increasingly, the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry books have added more sexual content to their story lines, classifying both series in a new hybrid genre that blends romance, erotica, and paranormal fantasy. To judge from Hamilton's consistent appearance on the bestseller charts, readers find the mix spellbinding.

Good To Know

One thing you will never find in a Hamilton novel is a cliffhanger. She believes that cliffhangers unfairly tease readers who would then have to wait six months to a year to have some sense of resolution. As she said during an interview with Bill Thompson of Eye On Books, "Every book is a full meal. All the way from the appetizer to the dessert, so that you come away feeling that you've had an experience... and at the end you have that satisfied, full feeling."

Before Laurell K. Hamilton made a full-time career of blood, guts, murder, and mayhem, she had more humane pursuits -- she volunteered at an animal shelter where she played with unwanted pets.

In our interview, Hamilton shared some fun and fascinating facts about herself with us:

"I am incredibly stubborn. Telling me I cannot do something, especially if you cite the fact that I am a girl, will make me want to do it more and do it better."

"I am not my characters. We have some of the same traits in common, but we are very different people."

"Everything inspires me. Getting up in the morning, walking the dogs, watching a music video. Inspiration comes from everywhere."

"I love animals. I own four dogs, two of whom are rescues. In fact, Jimmy is with us because they were going to gas him if we didn't take him with us. As an older dog his chances of finding a home were fairly slim. But he has been a wonderful addition to our home."

"I like spending time with my family and friends. Something I often feel I do not do enough of. But there are only so many hours in a day."

"I like to read other people's works. I love reading cozy or historical mysteries when I can."

"I enjoy interacting with fans at planned public events. I enjoy talking to them and have met many wonderful people."

    Is there hope for LKH?

    I wouldn't say this continued the downhill drive of the Anita Blake books, but perhaps it hit a plateau. It has the same flaws as most of the recent books in the series- poorly written erotica, far too much navel gazing, not enough meaty plot- but the flaws seem to have been acknowledged and have been worked on.

    There were only two of the over-the-top erotica scenes, both with Jason (although one included Nathaniel), although I could have done without the preceding chapter of discussion of who, where,why, and how the sex was going to take place before each scene. There was a third scene that is only alluded to, which is even more pleasantly surprising. I don't think we can expect a change from the multiple partners and graphic yet not sexy scenes- that seems to, as Anita would say, "flat do it" for LKH- but at least she seems to be using the scenes and lifestyle reasonably.

    As far as the plottiness of the book is concerned, it was a little light until the end. Mostly, there is a lot of introspection and wibbling from Anita about her relationship with Jason, and a lot of background on Jason, his hometown, and his family... and then wham! Quite a bit of action at the end. Still, we haven't seen a lot of Marshal Anita Blake in recent novels, so it was nice to see those elements re-emerge. It gives me hope there may be even more in the next novel, as from what I understand, this was intended to be more of a "side" novel ala Micah. Anita even references both of her jobs, as federal marshal and reanimator, so maybe eventually we'll actually see her do them again.

    As you can expect, there is of course a lot of wonky ardeur complications, Marmee Noir antics, and ever more were-animals insinuating themselves into Anita's life. However, in the plus column, although we see the usual wanky Richard, we also see Richard as he was in the early days. Dare I say I have hope for his character, too?

    All in all, it seem that LKH has heard her fans' concerns, and is addressing them to some small degree. I do believe that some things will never change, and those that keep reading the series will have to live with the ardeur and the "his-em", as I have heard LKH call Anita's bevy of men, as well as Anita's continually growing powers. I think the best we'll get is a blend between old Anita's action-packed adventures and new Anita's erotically charged ones. I guess I can live with that.

    ETA: Reading reviews, I remembered a couple other little quibbles I had. First, the dialog. My god, these characters should not be tossing "like" into their sentences like teenage MySpacers, especially when it's inconsistent with their speech patterns from previous books. As well, every time Jason referred to someone as "soooo hot," it yanked me out of the conversation. I know he's supposed to be a bit frivolous on the surface, but really; again, he's not a thirteen year old girl. I like Jason, he's one of my favorite characters, so LKH, please, stop undermining him.

    Second, complete FAIL on understanding how birth-control works. One missed pill should not create the pregnancy angst and drama that it did in this book, especially since Anita's pregnancy "scare" a few books back was a complete false alarm.

    Ahem. Anyway. Two stars. Or, for Anita and company, like soooo two stars.

    Very Disappointing

    I was so anxious for this book to arrive...what a disappointment! Boring, slow-moving, no plot. More than half the book revolved around Jason's family issues, with a little excitement thrown it at the very end as a second thought. I was literally surprised at how such an awesome series could go downhill so badly.

    Disappointed....

    I'm shocked that there are still so many Anita Blake fans out there today...Like many, I fell in love with the first several books in the series. Hamilton's imagination & the world that she took you into was enthralling. I could hardly put a book down & I could practically have expired while waiting for the next one to get published. And while I found Anita's love triangle with Jean Claude & Richard exciting, I'm a bit confused on how her character did a complete 180* from being a touch too reserved to being so promiscuous...When I pick up an Anita Blake book today, I feel like I'm reading soft porn! This was part of the reason I never caught on to Hamilton's Meredith Gentry series, because I felt there was a true lack of originality in the story line. I mean, sex sells, but you can only go so far with it. I mean, we get it, Anita has sex with these men. Do you have to describe EVERY encounter??? What happened to all the serial killers & evil magical entities that were in St. Louis? Did they just suddenly stop? Anita still had friends on the Police Department. If a crime came up & they needed her, they would still call. And what happened to all the weird things that used to happen while she was working her job raising the dead? Those all suddenly stopped too...I gave this book a bad review because I don't believe it was Hamilton's best writing. As a matter of fact, the only two REALLY important things that happen in this book are (A) Jason becomes Anita's wolf to call (By the way, did anyone else predict Anita was soon going to become tied to him in some way? As she is with ALL the men in her life???) & (B) the anger Richard inherited from Anita is replaced by his own version of the ardeur. This book, honestly didn't even need to be published to have any overall importance to the series. We're also introduced, through word of mouth, to Maximilian, who's the Master of Las Vegas, & who will most likely be introduced with his wife (the Queen of the white tigers in Vegas) in Hamilton's next book, Skin Trade, which from the preview, I am holding out hopes for since it involves her receiving a severed head from a vampire serial killer in Vegas. Could this be a slight come back to the Anita Blake most of us love??? I do hope so, & if there are other readers out there who feel similar to me, I would urge you to write to Hamilton, or to simply write a review yourselves. There was a large movement to get Richard back to his old calm self, which apparently worked, so maybe another movement could convince Hamilton to find a medium ground where Anita can finally be comfortable with who & what she does, instead of constantly being a self-hypocrite about what she really wants.

    MIA-Anita Blake and the plot

    Ugh, chapter after chapter of group sex. Where is Anita Blake, vampire hunter and zombie raiser? What happened to the plot? Sorry, LKH, but I'm done with this series unless the real Anita Blake returns, rather than this Queen of Slutsville.

    GOOD STUFF, GOOD STUFF!!!

    Blood Noir was one of my favorite books in the Anita Blake series. First of all the fact that you get to see more from Jason, who I have thought was one of the most lovable werewolves. Laurell K. Hamilton has a way of mixing romance with action and adventure in a way that doesn't seem completely pornographic. The story was well written and kept my interest from the second I picked the book up till I read the last word. I've read a lot of mixed reviews about this book and I can't seem to help but wonder why. I read quite a few bad reviews right here on this site before I read the book and thought they just might be right. Although, when I started reading the book I knew they were wrong. The things they seem to find wrong with the book I couldn't figure out how exactly they came to those conclusions, it was as if we were reading completely different books. Or perhaps some readers are offended by sexual encounters. One of the main reasons people didn't seem to like it is because it's so much different from how the stories were when she first started the series. All I have to say to that is of course it's going to be different. If she kept the stories the same book after book there wouldn't be 16 fabulous Anita Blake stories that seem to be just as well received. In the humble opinion of an avid book reader, and lover, Blood Noir by Laurell K Hamilton is a must read for all fans. By that I mean fans of: Laurell K Hamilton, Anita Blake, Vampires, the Supernatural, or just books in general.

    I miss the old Anita Blake.

    I don't think a good Anita Blank book exist anymore. I wish I could read something as good as the first books she wrote. I don,t know who told her to change, but ...hell they were wrong.Everyone use to love her books and now all I see is how bad they are. It sucks! she is a good writer and had a good book. Now.........I wait till paper back and read a little bit before I pay the full price, which is never so far.Please write one more we all have...to read everyone knows you can do.

    Bye, bye, Blake!

    Years ago, I started a thread on Laurell K. Hamilton's message board asking that the character Jason's story be explored more. Even in those days, the minute character development kept me coming back for more. 10 years later, and, 'A book about Jason?? YES!' Surely, my wish came true - a story about my favorite character kicking mucho buttocks with Anita, all the while ignoring her egocentric rants and compliment-fishing. I was so excited... And I couldn't be more dissapointed. Blood Noir is a continuation of Anita rounding up more anonymous himbos. By chapter 3, Jason is a self-depreciating, whiny baby with a serious bout of Perceived Paternal Acceptance disorder. By chapter 6, he's already morphed into just another unrealistic boy toy - alternately chattering incessantly about Anita's feelings and looking for the hook on her bra. Even the tough cop who protects her and Jason's rough, right-wing, bitter father are wimpering wusses by the end. And the writing...oh, the writing. It's 3rd grade at best. There are more commas per sentence than in the national deficit. All the characters speak like extensions of Hamilton...er, I mean Anita. The word 'actually' is everywhere. Hamilton chooses repetitive catch phrases over more gratifying description 'i.e., 'He gave me a hint of that smile that makes the customers give him all their money.' Really... AGAIN!?' Inconsistencies abound: Suddenly, Anita can venture into another master's territory without prior consent? She called a gazillion folks to tell them she was taking the trip...was work NOT important enough to call? She apparently forgets'?' that wounds from wereanimals heal 'human-slow'. There's a kind of inbreeding in Jason's home town, yet he's had sex with almost everyone? The characters are just now figuring out that female weres can bare children if someone will 'accept their beasts' in the interim. 'Uh, DUH! That was an obvious implication the first time it happened to Anita.' And was there something wrong with Richard's phone? The sex scenes are now well-beyond hilariously cheesy. They're now followed by Hamilton's...er, sorry...ANITA's own counseling to the reader on what 'good sex' is/should be. So, now, I don't have time to laugh at all the camp...I have to grab my pen and paper for the lesson. In honesty, I didn't pay for this one. Hamilton stopped earning my money several books ago. But the chance to read more about my favorite spunky character? Had to be done. 10 years ago, I pled so desperately to learn more about the straight-talking, wise-cracking, take-no-prisoners, self-accepting, nonchalant man who would rather die than feed Anita's ego. I'm saddened to say, I'm sorry I asked.

    Bloody Boring

    I wonder if Ms. Hamilton used mad libs to write this book since it was so formulaic of recent books. In fact read this book and mad lib your own Anita Blake story.

    Part1. Anita sexes it up in ways that makes the karma sutra look prudish.

    Part 2.Anita whines how insecure she is,not sexy enough,not strong enough,needs constant affirmations from her 8 boyfriends. Every one constantly psychoanalyzes each other. Head honcho vampires try to take over Anita's brain.

    Part 3. Half the town wants to kill her while the other half wants to bang her so she must oblige them,maybe throw in some bestiality with some metaphysical bull.

    Part 4. Must have epic argument with Richard then try to have make up sex.

    Part 5. kill the bad guys.

    Part 6. add on another boyfriend

    I don't know what these other people are talking about, but this is the best book I have ever read. I lllluuuuvvv Nathaniel and I think that he along with Jean Claude and Micah are my favorites. She needs to drop everyone else and stay with those three.

    I love all of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake books!

    With that said i didn't know how much i had missed the executioner an Marshal side of Anita until i got to the end of Blood Noir. Which is a very good book. The gun fight at the end maybe short but it reminded me of how kick ass Anita can be. I can't wite to read Skin Trade b/c it has Edward "yum" in it an Otto can't forget him! If you've not read any of Hamilton's work i recommend you start with Guilty Pleasures and not to stop until you've read them all. Now if you have read some of her book but not all and you love Edward as much as i do Obsidian Butterfly is the book for you it is my all time fave!

    Obsessed with Anita Blake Series

    I have read and re-read all of Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series, and have loved them all. I was a bit skeptical when I first began this newest installment, because it took Anita away from some of the most dangerously delicious characters... but I was pleasantly surprised that it still containted all the thrills, mystery, sex, character development and intrigue that all her other books contain. It was nice to finally learn more about Jason, for he has been an important part of Anita's life, yet until now, readers knew nothing about him. I did love this novel, and I would encourage everyone to read it. Hamilton can capture the imagination like no other reader, and pull them into her dangerously seductive worlds that she has created. I already pre-ordered her next book, and hope she keeps them coming! While i wait, I'm starting her Meredith Gentry series, and I hope they are just as good.

    Jennifer Wardrip - Personal Read

    More Anita. More sex. More people trying to kill Anita, more of Anita killing other people. More pouting and stupidity from Richard. A Jean Claude who is nearing maudlin. Jason begging (again). Nathaniel wanting rougher sex (again). Men and women both bespelled by Anita's cuteness and charm (again...and, yet, what?).

    Basically, for followers of the series, you'll read it, because even if someone told you it was made up of only three 20-chapter sex scenes, you'd still read it. But please, do yourself a favor and borrow it from the library. At least that way you can save your money, even as you give up your common sense.

    What has happened to the plot lines?

    I have loved LKH. books for many years, however the sex in the books seem to have taken over all plot lines. I have continued to read her anita blake books in the hopes that some of her old creative style will be back. I don't mind some sex mixed in but for God sakes when that is 80 percent of the story it gets boring. But i'm still hopeful the stories will get more interesting. Mabey she'll consult with the police again or something. Who knows?

    Blood Noir (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series #16)

    I read the first chapter of this book. The emphasis is not on the dilemma Jason faces with his sick father. It revolves around sex. Then because the writer doesn't understand pace, suspense, plot or character development it does more sex. This book was supposed to be about Jason? How is going to the 'country' of Old Europe related to Jason's story? Sadly I think those who want story rather than badly written erotica need to go elsewhere. Even those who read for erotic content need to go elsewhere as this writer has lacks any writing ability to bring true sensuality to her characters.

    Blood Noir (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series #16)

    One can easily read a preview of this book by going to her website. That's right the book revolves around sex! So if you like books that are not well-written about sex, you'll like the book. Big deal. This series is overrated and dead tired. The writer needs a vacation. I think everyone has an attitude, some just know what they are talking about and some don't.

    FINISH THE STORY ALREADY

    Reading the first chapter i have to agree about the rabid sex scenes. Give it a rest. Her first couple of books were incredible, now they are getting to be soft porn. Come on hamilton get up to par again.

    Where did the plot go?!?!?!

    This book was definitely not my favorite. Now don't get me wrong, Laurell Hamilton knows how to write some delicious sex scenes, but seriously now, could she toss in a little bit of a story line every once in a while? Anita started out as a powerful do-not-mess-with-me-or-I-will-pound-you-into-swiss-cheese kind of a woman, and now she's really nothing more than the stereotypical slut that no one wants to associate with except she still carries weapons...yay. Please get back to great storytelling Miss Hamilton, I know you can do it!

    Welcome back LKH

    I was hoping, when I first saw the cover, that LKH was getting back to what made me love the series in the first place. The murder mystery. I was not totally disappointed in this. However, the erotic scenes, while wild and definitely fantastic, are still too much too many. Anita being a succubus only goes so far before it becomes boring and skip worthy.

    I like that this book focused on Jason and his past and family since he is my third favorite character (after Edward and Claudia). I liked his whole family story and we finally get to see the Jason behind the sex crazed often wise guy we've come to respect.

    I do like that the sex isn't the forefront of the book anymore and that it's getting back to basics and incorporating more mystery. I'll give this one a 4!

    Great!

    Finally! Jason is one of my favorite characters. It was a great plot, but I wish I knew all the answers already. It is a great read, something a bit different that the other books, less drama, and more focused on one problem than many.
