Overview

Goldsberry Hollow was a rural community in Martin County, Indiana that was first settled in the 1800s by the Goldsberry family. When Alanson Lyon moved his family into the hollow in 1864, it made the Goldsberry family unhappy, because Alanson was a wealthy man who built a large home and set up a large farm. After Alanson and his family got settled, the Goldsberry family became accepting of them.

When Alanson died, his son, Joel, became the owner of the farm. About the same time, John Goldsberry's daughter, Malinda, became pregnant, but she wasn't married. To keep her father from beating her to death, Joel took Malinda and her daughter into his home, hiring her as his housekeeper. Joel fell in love with Malinda and eventually married her.

Malinda also had an older sister who lived in the hollow whose name was Margaret. When Margaret's husband died just a few months after Malinda did, the Goldsberrys naturally assumed Joel would marry Malinda's sister. When Joel didn't marry Margaret but married Adaline Cannon instead, a family feud broke out, resulting in Adaline's murder.

From church picnics and pie-eating contests to making moonshine and cousin love, this based on a true story takes you through life in a rural farming community in the late 1800s. Add to the story jealousy and greed versus the desire to marry, raise a family and have a happy home, and the simple life of a wealthy farmer is left in total disarray.

Meet the Author

Carolyn Howard is a musician who resides in Evansville, Indiana. She wrote her first novel, Blood of My Ancestor, after she heard the story of her Great Aunt's murder, passed down through her family's oral tradition. Intrigued by the story, she began researching and was fascinated to learn how incorrectly it had been passed down. The only truth to the story she heard was that Joel was Catholic and Adaline was Protestant, that they decided to raise their children in both churches, and that Joel slept under the bier the night before Adaline's burial.

Blood of My Ancestor, by Carolyn Howard, is the real-life story

Blood of My Ancestor, by Carolyn Howard, is the real-life story about the intersecting lives of three families in pioneer Indiana. At the center of it all is Joel Lyon, an extraordinary man, whose life and choices had a profound effect on many people he came in contact with.

This story runs the gamut from beautiful love story, to abuse, betrayal, and murder. Ms. Howard's descriptions of places and events paint a vivid picture of what it must have been like in 19th century, rural Indiana. Her characters are so full of life that I couldn't help but fall in love with them. I started reading Blood of My Ancestor near bed-time, and at the end of every chapter I told myself "just one more." However, Ms. Howard's writing just kept pulling me farther and farther into the tangled lives of the Lyons, Goldsberrys and Howards making it impossible to put the story down. In the wee hours of the morning, I finished the book, wiped the tears from my eyes, and finally went to bed.

I highly recommend Blood of My Ancestor to anyone who loves a good read, and I hope to have the pleasure of reading many more books by this author in the future.

First a quick caveat - the author is my cousin, and I had never heard this family story until she started researching it. I've been following her updates, and eagerly awaiting her book, and I was not disappointed. Carolyn does a great job making the historical setting com ealive, and the characters are very well drawn. She's got the vast majority of the period details down perfectly, and makes this time period come alive. I found myself sitting at Panera for about an hour after I finished my lunch one day, because I couldn't put the story down to move on to other things. If you enjoy historical fiction, I think you'll enjoy this book!

Blood of My Ancestor is a compelling story, wrapped in history but told with such color and vibrancy that I found it difficult to put down. Carolyn Howard's interpretation of this family saga made each character real and memorable. I was sorry when I finished --- I wanted to read more! I look forward to more works from this new author!

The Blood of My Ancestor by Carolyn Howard is a beautifully writ

The Blood of My Ancestor by Carolyn Howard is a beautifully written historical fiction set in southern Indiana in the 19th Century. As with all families, there are those family stories that are passed from generation to generation. As Carolyn began to investigate her family genealogy , the murder of her great aunt Adaline just didn't agree with the family version of the events. This began her journey to find the truth about Adaline's murder and the basis of her 1st novel. As I read The Blood of My Ancestor the characters came alive, especially those of Joel, Melinda and Adaline. I found myself always wanting to read the next chapter to find out what happened to the characters that I had become emotionally attached to. This story gives the reader a good look inside a farming community in 19th Century rural Indiana. Carolyn made great effort to stay true to the events of the time period. The Blood of My Ancestor by Carolyn Howard may be her 1st novel but hopefully not her last. A must read for anyone who likes historical fiction.

I LOVED this book, once I started I couldn't put it down.  The research into the family trees alone had to be hours upon hours and finding
old family pictures was also.  Ok, so I'm a little prejudiced as Tom Goldsberry, was my great, great grandfather, but I had never learned about
him or much of that side of my family.  I lived in Martin County for years and never knew about many of the things that happened in this book
and the author has become such a dear friend to me, even though I have never met her.  I bought several copies of the book for myself and
family members and encouraged everyone I knew on Facebook from home to read it.  What great discussions we had!!  I can't wait to read the next book!

I enjoyed Blood of My Ancestor very much.   I have read a lot of historical fiction by famous authors about famous people, famous events, and significant eras of history.  This book is different.  It is about the lives of the author’s ancestors and their neighbors in eighteenth century rural southern Indiana.  Each experiences loves, disappointments, joys, tragedies in a backdrop of actual documented events.  It culminates in a brutal murder and a killer tornado, both of which are real and documented.  I felt as though the characters could have been my own ancestors.  The story is NOT a sentimental melodrama.  I highly recommend Blood of My Ancestor.

I enjoyed the book ONLY, knowingly it is a historical fiction.I also have researched the Goldsberry family & have found they were quite a quaint family with old fashion values. It's too bad, that this good reading book didn't have more of the true in it. For a fiction, it was ok, just not a lot of "true" in it

Where to start...first, this is not a book I would typically read.  Historical fiction has never been my thing.  However, I thought I would try it out and I am so glad I did!  Though the beginning starts slow, it's a great way of introducing you to the characters.  You live their lives through the story and feel their emotions throughout.  It was a wonderful read!  I highly recommended it!

Ms. Howard blows me away in this, her very first novel. I realize some of her writing style is yet to be developed. Still, the story is fantastic, and her honesty is refreshing. Please keep writing!

Author Caroline Howard captured the spirit of a family living in the 1800’s with the twist of a true life murder mystery peppered with historical facts.
I enjoyed taking a journey through Goldsberry Hollow  and getting to know the Lyon & Goldsberry families.  Their lives are a reminder of how in this modern day, history continues to repeat itself  demonstraing love , betrayal  & family issues  are basically the same throghout history.
I must say, once I started reading this book I had a very hard time putting it down. I wanted to find out what was next! Caroline Howard captured my imagionation and it is a well written book.
