Blood Operatives of the Barium Sunsetby Alvarius B.
There are those who will complain that seven years is too long a time to wait for another Alvarius B. record. And there are those who will say that when the result is that good, the number of years doesn't matter. The second point of view certainly has credence, but please do feel free to disagree. There are those who will complain that seven years is too long a time to wait for another Alvarius B. record. And there are those who will say that when the result is that good, the number of years doesn't matter. The second point of view certainly has credence, but please do feel free to disagree. Blood Operatives of the Barium Sunset packs a lot of fun, intelligent cynicism, and studio genius -- enough to satisfy any Sun City Girls fan and reach out to a part of the neo-folk audience. Alan Bishop, the man behind Alvarius B., pulls out all the stops on this release, from his dark lyrics picturing shady characters to his trademark multi-tracked vocals, the high production values, and his cast of guest musicians, including Eyvind Kang, Richard Bishop, and Tim Young, who contributes a dead-right guitar solo in "Dracula Frizzi." That song is a strange and oddly moving reinterpretation of Fabio Frizzi's theme from Andy Warhol's Dracula. Bishop's vampire love lyrics and Frizzi's melody combine to form a striking torch song, one of the album's highlights. "Shenandoah" is another cover given an uncanny reading, but Bishop also adds his own pieces of Americana to the collective imagery. With a banjo and vocal delivery occasionally bringing to mind Eugene Chadbourne, he tells the story of a backyard nuclear bomber, a disquieting dealer ("Mr. 786"), and the death-bringing Colonel Fawcett, among other colorful characters, all presented with catchy folk melodies and creative arranging twists. The most compelling album of left-field folk since Christian Kiefer's Medicine Show, Blood Operatives of the Barium Sunset first came out as a limited-edition LP on the Abduction label. Hopefully it will be reissued on CD. It sure deserves it.
