Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
After the massacre at Vampire Academy, Rose Hathaway faces the most task of her life and she knows that she must do it alone. With Mason departed for the other world, Rose must hunt down and kill Dimitri Belikov, the man she most loves. The fourth nail-biting episode of Richelle Mead's popular vampire series dramatically shows the fatal power of a promise.
Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
In this fourth installment of the "Vampire Academy" series, Guardian Rose Hathaway sets out on a private mission to find—and kill—her mentor and lover, Dimitri Belikov. At the start of the novel, Rose has to choose between protecting her best friend Lissa, the last surviving Dragomir princess and student at St. Vladimir's, and tracking Dmitri to fulfill her final vow to kill him so that he cannot be part of the Strigoi. Rose chooses to follow her heart and fulfill her promise to Dmitri, leaving Lissa depressed and vulnerable at the Academy. Rose's mission takes her to Siberia, to Dmitri's hometown, and into his family member's lives. At the same time, Rose travels into Lissa's mind and sees that all is not well with her friend. Worse, Rose does not find Dmitri. He finds her, and he takes her prisoner in the Strigoi stronghold. Dmitri tries to convince Rose to allow him to "awaken" her by biting her and drinking her blood. Rose struggles with her decision, but ultimately escapes from Dmitri and manages to drive a silver stake through his heart. Rose then rushes to help Lissa escape from the mind-bending clutches of nefarious Avery. By the end of the novel, Rose has saved Lissa and discovered that Dmitri isn't actually dead; he has sent Rose a letter telling her that she should have made sure to finish the job and that he will come after her. Fans of the "Vampire Academy" series who are already familiar with the characters' backgrounds and the dynamics of vampire society will undoubtedly find this installment exciting. Readers new to the series will likely have difficulty sorting out the complicated relationships of the characters, as well as the details of the alternate worldin which the book is set. Recommended for young adult readers who are fans of the vampire romance genre. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—This latest installment is a wonderful mix of love, loss, loyalty, and betrayal. Half vampire and half human, Rose Hathaway's world is torn apart when the love of her life, Dimitri, is turned into a Strigoi, one of a group of evil, undead vampires out to destroy the Moroi, who are living vampires. She drops out of St. Vladimir's Academy and journeys to Russia to save Dimitri from himself. In St. Petersburg, she befriends Sydney, a member of a secret group of alchemists who aids in her quest. Together they track down Dimitri's family in Omsk; her stay there gives her time to heal as well as to make an important discovery about her relationship to her friend Lissa, a Moroi princess with healing abilities. When Rose confronts Dimitri, he takes her hostage and puts her to the ultimate test. The story features strong character development and an action-packed plot full of many twists and turns. A well-written and satisfying story that will leave older teens wanting more.—Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

Caution may be a lil bit of a spoiler!!

Ok I have read all of this series and almost all the other vampire books there are out there. This is series is definantely up in the top two! I really love Rose as a character. She is what made me keep reading from the first book! She is like what some girls and women should be like! Strong, funny, the first to defend her friends, a total smart a s s! lol I really liked all of that about her. BUT in this book Ricehelle Mead made her seem so so so weak! I mean to me she just didn't seem like the same Rose Hathaway that all the readers know and love. I mean Ms. Mead made her the one thing that she truely hated: a blood whore. I mean come on!!! Geez! I would have never expected that one to happen!
The other thing I didn't like was how she couldn't do the one thing she set out to do: save Dimitri! I mean I know that would be hard but I thught Rose could do anything........ I really hope that her and Adrian get together! lol He is a really great character because he is soooo unpredictable sometimes! Rose really has a thing for him!

Over all good book but a little disapointing. But I still can't wait for the next book! I checked Ms. Mead's website and the NEXT BOOK is scheduled to come out MAY 18, 2010!* Most likely subject to change but at least we have some kind of idea when the next one is coming! HAPPY READING TO ALL! =]

    Just read it

BLOOD PROMISE is a great teen novel, Rose Hatahway is going through some serious soul searching in this book, as she's left behind Lissa, who she has promised to guard and her honest to goodness best friend for life (Lissa brought Rose back from the death, doesn't get anymore lasting than that), and has gone to Siberia to find and destory her former mentor and lover Dimitri, who is now a souless, undead Strigoi: think classic vampire myths.
Rose comes across Dimitri's family and finds in them the kind of family she's always thought she wanted (excepting the crazy-yet hilarious grandmother). It sidetracks her, but Abe, the mob-boss esque Moroi (described as dressing like a pimp or a pirate, just one who looks like he could brake your kneecaps), warns her to get out of Siberia. She doesn't listen to him of course, but does leave the town and Dimitri's family to continue her quest.
Don't worry about Lissa though, as Rose often slips into her head and we get to see plenty of her, Christian and Adrian, as well as what Academy drama is being stirred up.
We get plenty of new characters as well: Sydney the uptight Alchemist who you'll (hopefully) come to like, Avery who is a new friend of Lissa's at the Academy, Abe who I mentioned already, plus a shadow-kissed couple, Dimitri's family and a few minor characters as well.
The ending is a serious dun-dun-duuuuuun cliff hanger, where Rose is on the verge of her next big adventure, but she appears poised to take it on.
THE POINT: great book: butt-kicking action, character development, can't wait for the next book.

I just finished the book and OMG. I loved it! It killed me what happened to Dimitri in shadowkissed. This was more than i could have imagined. It really goes into depth on Rose and Dimitri's relationship. It was nothing how i thought it was gonna be.The ending floored me. I was in total shock and now we all have to wait until 5/2010 to read Spirit bound. AHHHHHH I hate the wait. But I highly recommend this book. Richelle mead kicked a**.

    Holy crap.

I finished the book in one day. i could not put it down. Holy crap. it was just so emotional. just as much emotion as the ending of the 3rd one, i think. oh god. i laughed. i cried. i wanted to rip the pages apart. (i know i wouldn't but i came close.) i love how there's the usual humor. Rose Hathaway is back. the badass vampire killer. sometimes i hate getting all emotional when reading a book, but this time, it's okay. it just proved how good this book is. what bought me to tears was the time in the bridge. what Dimitri and Rose said to each other in the end. oh god. i didn't expect that. it was so hard to keep reading, to see what would happen next, but at the same time, you don't want to. and when she was telling her stories about Dimitri to his family and friends. then mad. i HATE Avery. even if she just wanted to use Adrian for her stupid reasons or she was really attracted to him, i hated her for that. i am now all for Rose and Adrian. i'm over Dimitri now since he's basically crazy. i would scream out loud whenever i would read about Avery being with Adrian and Lissa. this book was just an emotional rollercoaster ride. you had the ups and downs. i can't wait for the next one. i'm sure Richelle Mead would not disappoint us. all 4 books have been the top of my favorites and i know it will remain that way. i hope Adrian and Rose will finally be together in the next one. at least he doesn't want her dead, unlike someone. oh, and this is so much better than the Twilight series. i definitely recommend this book to anyone who's not afraid to cry when reading a book.

    Disappointed

I was so excited about this book that I ran out last Tuesday to pick it up. I read it in two days and was actually left upset. I love what Richelle Mead writes and will always be a fan but I wanted more out of this book.

The dynamics between characters wasn't in this book. What happend was expected and what I have liked so much about this series is there always seemed to be some twist toward the end that answered all the questions. There was none of that in this book.

I guess I will just hold out until next year for the next book in the series.

    Addicted to these Series.

This Series is the most AMAZING set of books i have ever read in my entire life. I'm only 13 but i have read quite a few books. I just finished reading Shadow Kiss today and went online to see if there was a website for them and then found out there is not only going to be a 4th one but also a SIXTH!!! ahhhh! This is NO DOUBT better than the Twilight Sega. I personally HATE stephanie myer and her work. i havent read the books but i've tried and they just suck. Now off of that dreadful topic, i'm sooo dissapointed that Dimitri is a strigoi now!!!!! he NEEDS to end up with Rose againn. i will die if they don't end up together. Lissa's character annyos me in a way already so i swear if Rose ends up like chosing her over Dimitri i will like stop readingg. hmm, I realy hope that Rose doesnt end up like falling in love with Adrian!! I wish like there was a way for Lissa to bring Dimitri back to normal, or like Mason was lying and he isnt really a Strigoi. god i am more than addicted to these books and am going to dieee waiting for the new ones to come out. D=

    Mixed Emotions

I read this book in about four hours, and after finishing, i can definitely say i was not disssapointed. The writing is as amazing as it was in the first three books, and the characters maintained the edge that kept you loving them in the previous books. But, i was really mad at the end. Im not going to say why, just that once i finished the book i was really angry with Rose. Overall though, this book was just as great as the previous books, and you end up getting a lot of detail about Rose and Dimitri's realtionship.

    enthralling

i have read numerous books, but mead is one of the few that can actually have her story grab a hold of you so that you feel every emotion that characters do just as strongly. i feel it was so much more amazing then what i expected. i will say i wished rose would of been done with her past and been able to pick up the pieces and move on.the ending is a little angering, but it makes me wait with anticipation for the next book horribly. im very curious how her relationship with adrian will play out.nevertheless, this series is amazing and you will not regret reading it. rose is an amazing heroine.

    My Predictions on Blood Promise

I have a few predictions for this book. Many believe that Rose some how may be able to bring Dimitri's soul back, because she can contact the dead, which is a posiblity. I also wonder if Lissa might be able to bring him back because he is tecnically not dead. It may be possible for that to happen because Lissa brought back Rose when she WAS dead, but Dimitri isnt entirely dead. I also begin to wonder if Rose will be able to find Dimitri by using her connections with the dead. She gets a sick feeling near strigoi, but she also as a connection with the dead, or you may say ghosts, spirits, or souls. I believe that in seeing the dead, like Mason, they want to help to her live and survive because she is still alive and they don't want to her to die. I believe that if Dimitri is killed, many people who read the series may be dissapointed. So my hopes, and many others, is that Dimitri will live.

We have seen Rose struggle throughout the series so far with problems normal teenager don't have to deal with. It is more than likely that Rose will learn more about herself, because throughout the series, she has changed so much, physically and emotionally, that she probably will never be the same Rose again.

Richelle Mead is an amazing author. The Vampire Academy series has never failed to bring something new to the table. When i think of the next two books, i think of seeing wars and changes in the vampire world, new and old enemies coming, power being shifted in the Moroi government, new changes in ways thinks are done, love, lose, and friendship. I look forward to reading the next few books, and seeing the outcome.

(PS:HAS ANYONE NOTICE THAT ON VAMPIREACADEMYBOOKS.COM, THE PICTURE COVER OF SHADOW KISS ON THE HOME PAGE, HER EYE TURNS RED IF YOU WATCH IT. GO TAKE A LOOK.)

    THATS HOW IT ENDS!

Blood Promise. The fourth book in the Vampire Academy series. If you havent read the other three books of the series then it wont matter. The true love, passion, and adrinalin in this book is so bright and fragrant that you dont need any explaining as to who or where or when. This book is about making decisions and figuring out the right path for you. The ending leaves you wanting more and you almost think the author is playing with her readers....but shes not, and a sequel is coming out, thank the lord!

    cant wait!!

the last three books were truly wonderful and this one should be too. this series is right up there with the twilight saga. although i still love the twilight saga more, this is no doubt my second favorite. rose is such an awesome character and i believe that most girls would want to be her. the story takes the reader on an unforgettable roller coaster ride, and this book shouldn't be any different.

    Cannot Wait For New Release

I never knew what I would be in for when I checked Vampire Academy out at the library one fateful day last summer. I'm proud to say that ever since, I have been hooked on the series. I love Richelle's writing styles, the characters are incredibly believable, the plot is constant and interesting, and she weaves humor beautifully into the dialouge. A fantastic series, and I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for this next book.
