Gothic fantasy meets vampire fiction in this debut novel from
Kristen Painter - full of politics, intrigue, and blood.

Born into a life of secrets and service, Chrysabelle's body bears the telltale marks of a comarré -- a special race of humans bred to feed vampire nobility. When her patron is murdered, she becomes the prime suspect, which sends her running into the mortal world...and into the arms of Malkolm, an outcast vampire cursed to kill every being from whom he drinks.

Now, Chrysabelle and Malkolm must work together to stop a plot to merge the mortal and supernatural worlds. If they fail, a chaos unlike anything anyone has ever seen will threaten to reign.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Intrigue and politics infuse Painter's unique vampire novel. Chrysabelle is a comarré, a human slave bred for beauty and high blood production. On the run after her master's murder, she will do whatever it takes to stay free and alive. Unfortunately, she accidentally took a dangerous magical artifact along with her, and now the ruthlessly ambitious vampiress Tatiana is determined to find her and retrieve it. Navigating the confusing world of her own species for the first time, Chrysabelle falls in with Mal, an attractive but curmudgeonly vampire exile living on the fringes of human society, and his ghost and shape-shifter friends, dragging them into her fight for freedom. Though the book is set more than 50 years in the future, it lacks almost all trappings of science fiction, focusing instead on the vampire court and its Borgia-level byzantine plotting. (Oct.)

Chrysabelle is a camarré, a human chosen for the pure, exquisite blood she can provide the vampire Lord Algernon. She despises this slavish existence and finds a means of escape. But someone murders Algernon, and Chrysabelle is the primary suspect. Soon she is captured by Mal, an undead who has vowed never again to drink from the vein, a difficult task since he finds Chrysabelle attractive on many levels. Meanwhile, the powerful Tatiana vows to the dark one that she will find the camarré and the ring that she is believed to have stolen. More supernaturals round out the ensemble: a were-leopard who is cursed to turn into a kitty when not in human form; Fiona, a ghost who haunts and cares for Mal; the Preacher, a rare vampire who can walk in daylight. Prophecy, curses, and devilish machination combine for a spellbinding debut of dark romance and pulse-pounding adventure. Two more novels will follow: Flesh and Blood (Nov.) and Bad Blood (Dec.).

Enjoyed the book immensely. It was a nice change from what I have been reading and light. And unlike many other urban fantasy tales this one was not filled with sex scenes every other page, which was a nice change.

I can not say enough nice things about this book. Hauntingly beautiful, heartbreaking, with deeply developed characters and a fast paced story line.Even though this is not a romance, it has romantic elements. The book ends on a cliff hanger, so reading the books in this series in order is a must!

loved it. Talk about a kick ass lead female character. I love this concept of a "super human" race bred to feed vampires. The story line is amazing, and if you think you know what's coming, i wouldn't put any money down because you don't. :) So good!

This series in fan-freaking-tastic and I find myself irritated when I have to go to work because it always seems like I'm in the midst of a really good part. The love interest in here drives you crazy (but not in the "oh no, we mustn't" kind of way that's so popular in romance novels). There is a good amount of action, the characters are very well developed, and the differences between our world and theirs is not EXPLAINED, rather, the explanation is subtley woven into the plot. If you want an escape, a series that will bring you into a different world, I highly recommend this one. Oh, and the development of the characters is really believable. BUY IT!

Blood Rights is a Gothic Fantasy and it definitely surprised me. I'll be honest; I wasn't sure about reading a gothic book. But I'm glad I did. Kristen Painter has made me love the darker fantasy. I would have really missed out on one the most deliciously wicked fantasies I've ever read. Painter is fantastic at writing dark. I'm still gushing over this awesome storyline with patron, comarre, and othernatural in this supernatural world. Blood Rights is the most fun I have had in a long time. I loved being pulled into a creepy setting and enjoying the dark and gritty surprised me.I love the gothic cover too. Chrysabelle is a Commarre. Her blood is pure and gives power to vampires. For this proposes, she has been raised from birth for the Noble vampires. Chrysabelle is also a kick-butt warrior and when she has to run to American, because of trouble she's in with the noble vampire, Chrysabelle hires Malkolm, who has been out casted and cursed by the noble vampires for killing his sire is Chrysabelle only hope. Malkolm is dark, dangerous and gorgeous. Definitely my kind of vampire. Malkolm (Mal) and Chrysabelle has of love-hate romance going on. They both have fallen hard for each other, but not going to admit it to each other. I love the way Mal is so protective of Chrysabelle against anyone who tries to dishonor her. Chrysabelle and Mel's romance is hot even if it doesn't get to first base in this first book. So of course I can't wait for the second book Flesh and Blood to see if this finally happens for them. Blood Rights had me gripped into this wicked, twisted, and dark fantasy, and loving every passionate page. I highly recommend Blood Rights as a must read. And I'm so glad I will not have to wait long for the second book in this series Flesh and Blood should be coming out around 25 of Oct. 2011

Putting aside all the public drooling over the gorgeous cover, for the story, itself, Blood Rights is a winner. The story was… good. I liked the way Kristen Painter built her world. It was different than any other vampire romance out there, and different is good. I loved Painter’s world, I loved her ghost Fiona especially, and enjoyed the story. On the whole, if you enjoy Urban Fantasy and post-apocalyptic stories, if you enjoy vampires and dark paranormal romances, you should give this a try.

Good story line but slow to come to fruitation. I read books one & two in the house of comarre & Chrysabelle & Malkom still haven't acted on their feelings for each other. I couldn't take it any more so I didn't bother reading book three.

Kristen Painter is a new author for me. After this book, I plan on reading all her works. Blood Rights is the first book in a series. I believe there are 4 currently written. I absolutely loved this book. Ms Painter takes her time setting the scene and introducing the supporting character lineup. Ms. Painter's vampire world is very different from most that you read. I loved the originality. I loved how strong the male and female characters are. I also love that all the books will be about this same couple. To tell you the truth, I would rate this book right along side the Sherrlyn Kenyon Dark Hunter series.

I love Kristen Painter's writing. She paints a masterpiece that is a fantasy grounded in the reality we all know. Her writing flows, and brings you to the edge of your seat waiting with anticipation to find out what happens. The House of Comarre series had me hooked from start to finished and I fell in love with the characters. All of them. Though the story is about vampires, it takes the vampire to a whole different level, and creates a whole new story of them, creating this amazing culture that is hidden in plain sight of the humans on Earth. I love this series and can't wait to read the next series.

I found this book at a Romantic Times Convention in Chicago!  I love these conventions because I get to find new and incredible authors.  Of course the cover of the book intrigued me!  Beautiful artwork.   The story was yet another new twist in the life of a vampire (but no one sparkles) and some old that we all love about the creatures of the night.   I loved the twist and turns this story took and could not wait for the next book to come out.   Great read and I would recommend to everyone!  Even the skeptics out there that think Vampire books are all the same.....So not!
