All Music Guide - Steve Huey
The Red Hot Chili Peppers' best album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik benefits immensely from Rick Rubin's production -- John Frusciante's guitar is less overpoweringly noisy, leaving room for differing textures and clearer lines, while the band overall is more focused and less indulgent, even if some of the grooves drag on too long. Lyrically, Anthony Kiedis is as preoccupied with sex as ever, whether invoking it as his muse, begging for it, or boasting in great detail about his prowess, best showcased on the infectiously funky singles "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss." Lyrically, Anthony Kiedis is as preoccupied with sex as ever, whether invoking it as his muse, begging for it, or boasting in great detail about his prowess, best showcased on the infectiously funky singles "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss." However, he tempers his testosterone with a more sensitive side, writing about the emotional side of failed relationships "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied", his drug addictions "Under the Bridge" and an elegy for Hillel Slovak, "My Lovely Man", and some hippie-ish calls for a peaceful utopia. Three of those last four songs excluding "My Lovely Man" mark the band's first consistent embrace of lilting acoustic balladry, and while it's not what Kiedis does best as a vocalist, these are some of the album's finest moments, varying and expanding the group's musical and emotional range. Frusciante departed after the supporting tour, leaving Blood Sugar Sex Magik as probably the best album the Chili Peppers will ever make.

    Best album by RHCP!!!!!!

This is my all-time favorite album after Are You Experienced by Jimi Hendrix. This album is perfect. I just don't stop bobbing my head to each song, they're so funky. The vocals, bass, guitar, and drums are all amazing. In my opinion, John Frusciante is the best living guitarist today.

    "yeah, that album..."

I started with John Frusciante's solo material and worked my way to the Chili Peppers, and truthfully, I just don't like any of their material. There are some really good things about this album, but overall it's just a disappointment. If you want something with substance, you may not find it here. The Peppers don't keep my interest. Flea has done excellent work as a studio bassist and Frusciante as a solo musician, but they don't seem to stand out here.

one of the greatest rock records of all time

before i bought this record, i was just a fan of the chilli's, but now i'm a follower of them. This is my favourite cd of all time. the guitar is so great, john frusciante is one of my favorite players and one of the best ever. he even influenced me to pick up the guitar, and as a matter of fact, i can play some of the songs on the album. flea is without question the best bass player ever to walk the face of the earth. this cd is completey different from theri earlier ones which were really funky, but this is pure rock, the riffs are so addicting.go buy it now, i actually have 2 copies of it, since one never leaves my cd player!

    Rock Masterpiece

On first hearing BSSM you will become aware straight away that this is a departure from the old RHCP style. These guys have matured musically and can really write and play fantastic songs. ''My Lovely Man'' is one of my favourite rock songs of all time - check it out. I'd stick my neck out and say that the outro to Sir Psycho Sexy is the most beautiful rock guitar compositions ever written. Hendrix himself would have been proud of it, it's up there with ''Little Wing'' and ''Spanish Castle Magic''. I lost this album once and simply had to replace it - no doubt about it. The best album of the '90s? You bet ya!

Cant buy it,But i still Luv it

Even though i cant buy this 1, I have heard 30 seconds of each song. And it is the best c.d. in the whole world. It has a unique sound no other band could even dream of doing. This is better than Pop music. This is Funk/punk. It may be Explict but it beats Bye Bye Bye. The best songs are Breaking The Girl and Under The Bridge. Anthony Kedis, Michael ''Flea'' Balzary, John Frusantae, and Chad Smith are the best in the west. (and north, south and easr

Essential; this was one of the best album of the '90s.

I'm a massive fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers; I have all of their albums, including their first three, which were produced by George Clinton. They were O.K., but I think switching to Warner Brothers and new producer Rick Rubin (who also produced albums by Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys) was the decision that really changed their music for the better. For starters, thanks to Rubin, some of the first and finest ballads were on this album, such as the sublime Breaking The Girl, the mellow I Could Have Lied and the brilliant Under The Bridge, which is surely one of the best singles ever. There is also a good dose of hip hop, in The Power of Equality and If You Have To Ask, which includes a great rythym and some really good rhymes. Some of the tracks are even funkier than before (Apache Rose Peacock, My Lovely Man, Mellowship) and they were still rude and loud-mouthed,in, for example, Suck My Kiss. Overall, this is a fantastic blend of punk, funk rock and hip hop that made a brilliant and legendary album; heading for the even better Californication in 1999.

    The Chili Peppers best

This is an amazing CD. This is much better than Californication and any CD by the Peppers. The first 11 songs are what make this CD great. Great variety. The end of the Cd is not quite as good, but worth listening to. The last song is somewhat funny. This is sort of second to Californication, but if you thought that was good, you will be amazed by this. So do yourself a favor and kick it old skool with the Peppers.

    RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS RULE!

This is DEFINANTLY the Red Hot Chili Peppers all-time best album. I practically wear the CD out listening to it. My favorite songs were Suck my Kiss (which was very sexual), Blood Sugar Sex Magic (also very sexual), Breaking the Girl, The Greeting Song, My Lovely Man, and They're Red Hot. AWESOME CD.

    A PEPPERS GREAT

Red Hot Chili Peppers had just done one of the smartest things that thy had ever done, switched from EMI to Warner Bros. and Rick Rubin to produce their second greatest album (the best would be CALIFORNICATION, almost 8 years later.) You got you traditional Peppers funky rock as in The Power of Equality and Funky Monks and Sir Psycho Sexy, then you get some Peppers rock like in The Greeting Song, My Lovely Man, and The Rightous and the Wicked. As a bonus you get some songs their hearts went into like Under the Bridge, I could have Lied, and Breaking the Girl. Frusciante gives a bang up guitar work and Flea has a great bass. Kiedis is too preoccupied with sex in some songs, like Give it Away and Suck my Kiss, but they're cool anyway. If you are a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, get this album!

The Best Album of Our Generation

'BloodSugarSexMagik' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is one of the most magnificent musical masterpieces of all time. Far surpassing anything that's been done in the last ten years by any other band, the Chili Peppers broke new ground w/this album. From the opening, heartfelt lyrics of 'Power of Equality' to the bold, shocking words of 'Sir Psycho Sexy,' this album has it all from lust to racial issues. The success of 'Under the Bridge' made RHCP a household name, but if you listen to the album, they'll be more than a name to you, they'll probably be your new favorite band.
