Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jeanna Potts
Can Meilin and her friends locate the talismans and save their countryland? Blood Ties is the third book in the “Spirit of the Animals” series. Meilin, Conor, Tarik, Rollan, and Abeke each have a spirit animal that communicates with them and guides them. As the story develops, the chapters alternate between the travels of Meilin to the travels of her friends. Meilin and her friends search for her dad, General Teng. They have left their home because the enemy, the Conquerors, led by the Devourer, invaded it. Searching for talismans, which have special powers, this group hopes to use these talismans to defeat the Conquerors. The author skillfully weaves the story and builds suspension making the reader want to continue reading the story. Each character has unique and consistent personalities. This is a story readers will enjoy. Scholastic has created online supplemental materials, which include a teacher’s guide and aligns it with Common Core provisions. There is also an online game for this book, which allows the reader to create a character, to select a spirit animal and to participate in the effort to locate talismen and save the world. Reviewer: Jeanna Potts; Ages 8 to 13.

Gr 3–7—This third book in the series (after Maggie Stiefvater's Hunted) jumps right into the action. Meilin and her spirit panda, Jhi, are trapped and starving in a bamboo maze while her erstwhile companions Conor (Spirit wolf Briggan), Abeke (Spirit leopard Uraza), and Rollan (Spirit falcon Essix) are sailing into enemy territory. Determined to defeat the Destroyer and his army of Conquerors, the team reunites to survive leeches, spiders, stinging ants, poisoned arrows shot by rhino riders, giant crocodiles, and even the Sunset Death to acquire the talisman of Dinesh the Elephant. Our heroes win the battle, but there's more to come in this war of good against evil in the four titles planned through 2015. Nicola Butler relates the story in a variety of expressive British accents, with each character differentiated by tone. The nonstop action, ever-present danger, and narrow escapes will appeal to fantasy lovers, especially veterans of" The "39 Clues" and "Infinity Ring" series.—Toby Rajput, National Louis University, Skokie, IL

Synopsis (May contain some light spoilers for earlier books in the series): Meilen has run away from the Greencloaks to search for her father in her homeland of Zhong. Conor, Abeke, and Rollan quickly follow - they hope to recover their friend and get the Slate Elephant talisman from Dinesh, the Great Elephant. But Zhong has been conquered, so the kids must fight through armies of enemies to find what they seek. The Devourer is gaining power, and he will stop at nothing to take over all of Erdas with his nature-defiling bile.  My thoughts: Another great installment of the series. And they just keep getting better and better! (Not, of course, because the authors are changing, but because the plot and characters are developing as the series progresses.) Like in the earlier books, Blood Ties shows the power friendship - of working with your team rather than trying to fight evil alone. It encourages trust - of your partners, your friends, and the power of Good to conquer Evil. Most of all, the story is fun. It's a delight to watch as the kids' distinct characters develop, and how each character adds to the dynamics of the team. The world-building is also a lot of fun - it has both a familiar and a novel taste. For instance, Zhong is the Erdas-equivalent of Asia. The comparison is undeniable, and yet Zhong's culture and scenery are also delightfully unique. And, of course, this book is filled with adventures, intrigue, and battles - which any lover of middle grade fantasy / adventure books craves. I'm looking forward to the release of the next book in the series, Fire and Ice, in July.

I don't need to read the book to know it will be good. When the last book left off Melin had decided to go back to Zhong to see if her father is still alive. Four words I MUST READ IT

These Spirit Animals books get better and better! This third installment was chock full of exciting action sequences and palpable danger. We also see a lot more character development, especially as Meilin struggles to understand her place with the Greencloaks. I enjoyed seeing her relationship with Jhi, her spirit animal panda, strengthen. After two books of wanting to throttle Meilin, it was a nice change of pace for her to finally get real. In this third book of the multi-author Spirit Animals series, the Conquerers are devouring whole cities in their quest to disrupt and control the bond between animals and humans. Concerned for her homeland, Meilin has left the others to find her father and fight the enemy. But Meilin soon finds that she's not the only one sneaking into the country. The story takes place largely in the country of Zhong, a pseudo Asia. Nix and Williams fill the book's locations with rich details. Over the course of Blood Ties we visit a massive bamboo maze, a swamp teeming with enraged crocodiles, and a lake surrounded by high cliffs. This is the first of the Spirit Animals books that really showed me the world of Erdas. I was also glad to see a stronger focus on the overall problem of the series, the Devourer's quest to conquer Erdas. Those enormous crazy-eyed crocodiles were terrifying! In my review of Book 2, I had to write a qualification about how multi-author series often water down the elements that make an author's writing style unique. However, that was not true in Blood Ties. I love Garth Nix's other books, such as Shade's Children and Sabriel, for his marvelous world-building. He and Williams pulled off a great world in this book too. Cheers! Overall, my students and I really love these books and this one is the best so far. Some of my fifth graders have expressed concern that the series is starting to get a bit repetitive. The first 3 are unique enough to be fun reads, but there is some formulaic writing emerging. It hasn't been annoying yet since the authors have mixed it up, but it I agree with my students that it will be a challenge to keep this series fresh.

Spirit Animals Book 3 - Blood Ties is the third in a 7 book series. Each book is written by a different author or as in the case of this book 2 authors. Williams and Nix have filled out more of the world of Erdas and brought Zhong to life. Their words take you there to see the beauty and destruction to be found there. Meilen has gone to her homeland following the end of book two to locate her father. She is soon followed by the other Greencloaks and of course danger has followed them as well. As they continue to bond with their spirit animals and develop their skills, but the still must work at trusting one another and working as a team instead of individuals. I do believe this is a series to be read in order to see the characters and plot evolve. Even though each book has a different author/authors they continue to blend the different styles and delight readers. I am lucky that I can excuse my secret love of books for younger readers by buying books for my great nieces and nephews, which I review before giving them. I look forward to reading the other books in the series and believe you will as well. My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.
