Overview

A thousand years ago, the Eleven Domains were invaded and the original inhabitants forced on the road as Travelers, belonging nowhere, welcomed by no-one.

Now the Domains are governed with an iron fist by the Warlords, but there are wilder elements to the landscape which cannot be controlled and which may prove their undoing. Some are spirits of place, of water and air and fire and earth. Some are greater than these. And some are human.

Bramble: a village girl, whom no-one living can tame ... forced to flee from her home for a crime she did not commit.

Ash: apprentice to a safeguarder, forced to kill for an employer he cannot escape.

Saker: an enchanter, who will not rest until the land is returned to his people.

As their three stories unfold, along with the stories of those whose lives they touch, it becomes clear that they are bound together in ways that not even a stonecaster could foresee - bound by their past, their future, and their blood.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This complex trilogy opener, YA author Freeman's first book for adults, describes the Eleven Domains, a landscape littered with prophecies, gods and ghostly warnings. Saker, a wealthy and callous enchanter's apprentice, seeks to avenge his family's massacre. Bramble, gifted with a connection to animals and woodcraft, kills a warlord's man in self-defense and must flee her home. Nervous young guard Ash trains to become an assassin and endures his beloved mentor's exploitation of his necromantic abilities. When Saker's vengeance-seeking walking dead roam the land, Ash must find ways to stop them as Bramble seeks to protect the people they threaten. Freeman shies away from simplistic morality, building elegantly well-rounded characters-most notably Bramble, who manages to be tough but not hard, a loner but not unsympathetic and sexual but not obsessed with romance-and interwoven stories that at times draw too heavily on George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire novels for inspiration. (Apr.)

Library Journal

Years ago, the warleader Acton invaded the land now known as the Eleven Domains, slaying its original inhabitants to make room for his own people. The survivors became known as The Travelers, fugitives in their own lands. As the stories of Bramble, a young girl with a gift for taming horses; Ash, a boy trained as a hired killer; and Saker, an enchanter seeking to raise the dead for revenge, move toward a destined joining, the hidden stories of the Domains' people come to life. YA author Freeman's first novel for adults depicts a world where ghosts commune with the living and where fate is foretold in the casting of stones. Gracefully narrated through many voices, this series opener belongs in most fantasy collections.

    Blood Ties

Pamela Freeman makes a nice transition from children author to adult fantasy with the first book in The Castings Trilogy: Blood Ties.

Freeman structures the chapters based on characters found in the tale. At first I found this a bit disconcerting and felt like my attention was being jerked about from one chapter to the next. Just I was getting into the character and scene the chapter ends and you find yourself somewhere else with someone else.

BUT, as I progressed through the book I found the treatment worked well and kept me captivated as the players began to become more and more linked in the story line. I believe Freeman's method kept the reading pace up and left me wanting to turn to the next page. A bit different but it worked well especially when a bit of back fill was strategically placed.

Murder, magic, gods, revenge, greed, lust for power and a motley band of would be heroes. All great ingredients for a fantasy.

    an insightful fantasy

Over a millennium ago the Northern invaders displaced the locals throughout the Eleven Domains. The conquerors became brutal warlords and the conquered Travellers nomads with no place to call home or a haven from their abusive rulers. Men watch their women of all ages raped and can do nothing but eat their rage for that is the lot of the Travellers to keep on shuffling from one place to another unwelcome by any warlord.---------------- In this world Travellers flee from one atrocity to another. However several have taken differing approaches. Bramble a young villager has tasted the taking of a life but feels no remorse as she flees from soldiers wanting to rape her. Apprentice Ash has been trained by street wizard Doronit as a safeguarder assassin who has killed, but feels regret with ghosts of his victims visiting him he knows he is no better than the butcher Acton the warlord. However it is Saker the enchanter who considers using black magic to destroy his people¿s enemies and return what he believes is rightfully his. Their actions and that of other Travellers and the warlords impact the ordinary people who just want to survive.----------- The first tale of the Castings trilogy is an insightful fantasy in which an event has repercussions that have further repercussions nothing is isolated. In some ways it will remind readers of Palestine. When the prime Travellers Ash and Bramble act, readers see their actions and the consequences on others, but not just warlords as communities are impacted. This brings a deep sense of reality, but can detract from the prime theme of the warlords vs. the outcasts. Still few fantasy sagas make the villages seems so genuine. BLOOD TIES is a strong opening gamut to the Freeman fantasy realm.---------- Harriet Klausner

    Absolutely great!

I just loved this book. Freeman delves into character backgrounds where no one person is all good or all bad. The flow of the story takes you to a whole other magical world, and it's fantastic! I can't wait for the next two books!
