    Fast paced, adrenaline pumping story!

A new taste from a new author. Imagine being brought up and getting punched in the face by your mother for training??? I thought the same thing at first, but this was a special training for our teen girl named Alexa. Alexa has a sister and a good friend named Jackson that stick together because they don't really have alot of friends at school. Something happens and our trio of friends find out alot of truths about themselves like being vampire, werewolf and halfbreed. They are transformed into another world of supernaturals and the story has so many twists and turns I couldn't stop turning the pages. Imagine meeting someone who you are so drawn to that it boogles you and this person calms you, soothes you, just makes you feel at peace. To Alexa this is Kayden a Warrior. And the story goes . . . . . I can't wait for Book 2 of this series, Half Black Soul!!!(less)

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Blood Warrior (The Alexa Montgomery Saga) by H.D. Gordon
A new author H.D. Gordon debut novel is worth picking up and reading. If you love PNR/UF then you will not be disappointed with this book. H.D. Gordon’s writing was very thought out and her words flowed and kept me reading till late in the evening.

When I first opened the book it seemed it was about a lonely young woman who was living in a very abusive home. It talked about her mother hitting her and I had to remember what genre I was reading so of course I knew there was a reason.

We are introduced to her sister Nelly, her mother and her one and only friend Jackson. In a fight for their life’s Alexa finds out more about herself and why all the practicing she has done with her mother is going to come in very handy.

This story is full of suspense, mystery and of course has a few young men who are falling for Alexa; I would almost say it’s more than a love triangle as there are a few men introduced to the story. This book is a page turner and left me wanting more. I cannot wait for this saga to continue. As any new series we know we will have to wait for book two. I am hoping H.D. Gordon is writing as I type.

I would recommend this book to all my friends who love reading PNR.
I don’t give book 5 stars a lot, to be a book that rates 5 is a novel that one I can’t put down or stop thinking about. The writing was excellent and like I said I never put the book down. This novel deserved the 5 star rating.

    Fantastic!!

Now, let’s get this out… THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! I love the fights and the cries and the laughs, and the yummy guys all over!!! I mean, come on! Who doesn’t love this stuff!

I think Ms. Gordon did an excellent job when she would say certain little details, it gives you enough to go on, but kept some things secret until the end… I am so stuck on who Alexa is gunna choose, because everyone seems to want something from her, so (we know) Jackson loves her, but can she chose her best friend… & what about Kayden, does he love her, or does he need her, since she is the “savior”…. I just dunno who is a bad guy in here, other than the lamia, and for some reason, I think there is something going on in that too! I can’t say enough about the way Ms. Gordon writes, it is EXCELLENT.

& yes, I LOVE cliff hangers… so this one was PERFECT!!! I need to say that I have some crazy emotions right now… because I was reading the blog posts & other’s reviews and was almost certain I was going to feel one way, and ended up feeling the OPPOSITE!! How can this happen, you say… well, thank Ms. Gordon because her writing has instilled in me some excellent life questions… like, would you chose to do the right thing if it mean giving up your life, or possibly the life of the one person who means the entire world to you? Or would you follow like a good soldier, when the people you care about are still getting hurt? You’re still getting hurt…. Yeah, this book was THAT GOOD!!!

Great Start for a New Series

You never know if a new series is going to hit the mark right off the bat, or if you will find yourself struggling to finish each chapter. Blood Warrior scored big! For me, a new book/series must grab my attention quickly and almost immediately or I will lose interest fast. With Alexa, her sister Nelly, and friend Jackson, readers step directly into their teenage lives with struggles of not fitting in at school, problems with a parent (that is an understatement), and feeling too young to grow up. All without missing a beat. An instant connection is made with the characters that make it so easy to slip into their lives. Readers will cry for the sisters, as well as laugh with them as they travel to a new place to start what they can only hope is a better life. Throw in Kayden (gorgeous Scotsman), Royalty, and a world none of them knew existed such a short time earlier and you have a place that is confusing and terrifying. H.D. Gordon was a surprise; a pleasant one. This was a good read and I will recommend it highly.

    Recommended!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. The author does a great job showing the struggles of a 17 year old as she faces a whole new reality after finding out that nothing she believed about her life is true, while weaving in interesting subplots. Although she is young and has a lot of growing to accomplish, Alexa Montgomery is an interesting heroine. She is loyal (almost to a fault), caring, and protective of those she loves, while still struggling with the emotions that all teenagers must endure. I am eagerly looking forward to see how she grows into adulthood and to learning more about the nature of the “monster” inside her. The love triangle was enjoyable to watch and yet we all know there is SO much more to both Jack and Kayden. Of course Alexa feels safe with Jack, they have been friends for a long time and he is in her comfort zone. Where Kayden is concerned, it is only logical that Alexa is tentative about him. She doesn’t really know him and he lets her in just enough to provide some answers, all the while she knows he is holding a lot back. It will take a lot for him to win her trust, bu Alexa is a girl that really needs to be challenged. I must say that I am team Kayden because he and Alexa have a symbiotic relationship that needs to be explored. Nelly, Alexa’s little sister, is the one character I have mixed feelings about. She comes off as naive but we all know she is hiding a lot of important information from Alexa. For that reason, I find it hard to trust that she is really looking out for Alexa. She has some fabulous powers that I hope she finds a way to use going forward. I hope in the next book Nelly will have more dimension and depth. This was a solid introductory novel that leaves the reader hoping for more. If handled well, the subplots and character development have the potential to morph into an enjoyable series. Looking forward to more!

A MUST read by an amazing new author!

When I read the summary I knew I had to read this book. I was hooked from the start. H.D. creates a very interesting world of vampires & werewolves in Blood Warrior. She keeps the reader's attention throughout the novel with unique twists in the ever unfolding plot.

The story is told from the point-of-view of seventeen year old Alexa. I love her as a character. She deals with so much pain & evil in the new world she is thrust into yet isn't whiny like some YA heroines. She is strong and loyal to those she cares about and always strives to do the right thing.

As the story unfolds, Alexa finds herself drawn into a love triangle square (as some people have called it). She has the attention from three different boys who all care for her in their own ways. She finds herself attracted to each of them in some form or another.

Personally, I found myself swooning over Kayden. He is sexy and mysterious and I believe him & Alexa are so right for each other despite what happens at the end.

I would recommend this book to all lovers of YA vampire romance novels. H.D. Gordon has captured my attention and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series, Half Black Soul, which is set to release on January 31, 2012.

This is a spectacular debut from a very talented writer. H.D. Gordon creates a compelling character in Alexa, with fully-realized supporting characters that play off of each other wonderfully. The world Gordon builds with different species of paranormal creatures is fascinating and wholly unique, with the right amount of paranoia and romance to keep you on the edge of your seat. The lamia are a nice touch of horror to the story, a race of freaky vampires. When Alexa and her friends take refuge in a city behind walls, protected from the lamia and full of other paranormals, Alexa quickly realizes that not everything is as it seems, with questionable goings-on taking place around the city, including an arena where the masses are entertained by fights between warriors. I love the mythology that Gordon creates in this first book of the series, particularly that of the warrior race, of which Alexa is the last. "Blood Warrior" is a prime example of an indie book done right - it could easily have been published professionally with Gordon's abilities. Minor grammatical errors are the only indication that this hasn't gone through the hands of many editors and agents, but seriously I had more fun reading this fast-paced thrill-ride than most books this past year. Highly recommended.

    The Year of the Warrior!!

2011 is the year of the Warrior!!!!!

    My rating: 5 Shooting Stars!!

I didn’t know what I expected from H.D. since this is her debut novel. But I have to say that I am truly glad I got my greedy little hands on this series in the beginning stages because it is going to be a force to be reckoned with! This book was out of this world!

    My Thoughts:

From the very first sentence the author has you hooked and wanting to read more. In the first few pages we meet Alexa Montgomery, a seventeen year old who is trying to fit in and find some normalcy in between being forced to learn combat/sword fighting and strength training with her mother that leaves her with black eyes every now and then and the fact that her mother is adamant on her perfecting these skills to “prepare” for protecting herself and her 1 year younger sister Nelly from some unknown source (but the burning question is from who?). We are then introduced to Jackson Kane, Alexa’s best friend/love interest who’s had her back ever since they’ve met.

The story then takes a turn for the worst when Alexa’s house is attacked by blood thirsty vampire's called the Lamia that seem to have one thing in mind…..Nelly. Alexa and her mother fight off these otherworldly creatures as best as they can but when they are outnumbered Alexa has to make the worst decision of her life which is to save Nelly and to leave her mother behind. In doing so Alexa, Nelly, and yes Jackson are introduced to a world and adventure that they’ve never known was possible or even existed.

I really loved how you can tell that H.D. took her time with every character. The reader is almost instantly able to connect with Alexa’s and Nelly’s character and story. They are not your typically fantasy character with no flaws and a stale personality. The main character is feisty, smart, caring, and a little insecure at the same time flaws in all. We really get to see every characters likes, dislikes, faults and this makes them all unforgettable even if they were important or not. The character I loved the most besides Alexa was Jackson Kane our mouth-watering Werewolf. Jackson really helps bring out the different sides in Alexa even if she is always giving him a hard time! He was so loveable that I instantly fell in love with his character and I was rooting that he would get the girl in the end (not that I want to admit it because I want him all to myself!).

H.D. creates the ultimate supernatural world that include Vampires, Seekers, Werewolf’s , and Warriors that all live together in one “super” community of different races that don’t clash or out shine the other. This book is beautifully written with a fresh take on the paranormal and its awesomeness! Blood Warrior takes the title of an ultimate page turning adventure and I sure as hell didn’t want it to end! I hope to continue this ride with H.D. and Alexa and I’m planning on devouring the rest of the series. Cheers for Blood Warrior!!!!

Recommend to: Beware: This series is addicting. This series is like Vampire Academy on Steroids!!!! I would not recommend this to people who are not obsessed with hot Werewolf’s, Warrior Princesses, Vampires that actually bite, and beings who can see into your soul.LoL

Best 1st Ebook I've ever had!

This has been the best four days of my life. If not for work, it could have easily been reduced to hours. This was my very first e-book read on my very first e-reader and it did not disappoint.

I’m talking 4.5-stars, but I'll round up to 5 for sites without a half scale.(I feel being generous today.) Thanks to the good people over at Shut Up & Read on GoodReads for enthrusting me to give an honest review.

Every chance I got, my Nook was glued to my hands. I’ve never seen a vampire/lycanthrope story told like this. H.D. Gordon put a new spin on vampire culture creating species within the race and a gated society hidden within our world. Complete with ancient secrets, prophecies, and oppressed people and of course…a chosen one.
Who happens to be a very strong lead female, also known as, "kick butt heroine"!

In the beginning I was a little scared of being instantly turned off. The story starts with a seemingly abused teen girl living in a dysfunctional household and most ignored outcast of her high school. Then before you know it, WAM…..BAM……things get turned so far upside down, I didn’t know how I could have ever been fooled.

Alexa, her sister Nelly, and best friend Jackson flee this new world and that’s when the fun begins. We’re introduced to Kayden. There’s a love triangle.
    Seriously, a love triangle.
Clarification- a real love triangle where both men are great guys; and I don’t know who she’ll end up with.

My only complaint is I would have liked to see more romance and a little more fighting. However, there’s so much more awesomeness that I can explore that'll have you kicking in the library door and pillaging the mall, neighbors, family, and friends. *GASP* Just to get your hands on this, but that’s all I’m telling…..sorry. You'll have to just read the book. READ THIS BOOK NOW!

Blood Warrior - A MUST Read!

I just finished this book & first off, I have to say that I loved it! I absolutely can't wait for Half Black Soul!

This is my first ever book review, so bear with me...

I enjoyed Alexa a lot because she's a strong female character. At times I felt sorry for her, rooted for her & even cringed on her behalf!

I must say I was quite conflicted by the love triangle - I like both Jackson & Kayden but I must say my romantic soul has always had a soft spot for that "instant connection..." type of love! I'm so looking forward to seeing where the love story part of the books goes.

This book has a great mix of action, drama, paranormal & romance. At times I felt my heart beating faster along with what was happening to the characters & I was really bummed when I reached the last page & realised that my journey with Alexa & the others had come to an end (for now...)

I can honestly recommend this great read by HD Gordan & I'm waiting (impatiently) for the next book in the Alexa Montgomery Saga!

    Very well written, excellent book.

Blood Warrior by H.D. Gordon is about Alexa Montgomery, a 17 year old girl who is in no way a normal teenage girl. She has spent her entire life "practicing" with her mother. Practicing consists of training with her mother to become a strong and skilled fighter. Her main focus is to protect and keep safe her sister Nelly. Alexa is sure that her mother and sister are hiding something from her, but does not know what. One night her home is attacked and she is forced to leave her mother behind to protect her sister. They travel to a new place called Two Rivers where Alexa finds out about a whole new world that her and her sister belong to.

I had heard lots of good things about this book, so I was excited to be able to receive a copy as part of the Read 2 Review program. I am very happy to say that this book did not disappoint. I thought that the characters were very well developed. The book has some similarities to Vampire Academy, but in my opinion does not detract from the book at all. Blood Warrior kept my attention throughout the entire book and I had a hard time putting it down when I needed to. I really enjoyed this book and I will definitely be getting the next one as soon as it is available. Thanks for the opportunity to read this H.D. Gordon!

    An Exciting New Series!

Blood Warrior is the story of Alexa, a 17-year-old girl struggling to fit into her life. She has a seemingly crazy mother, a sister she would kill for, and a best friend who she knows will always be there for her. Alexa’s life takes a crazy turn the night her home is attacked and she’s forced to run with her sister and friend Jackson, leaving her mother behind. Along the many twists and turns, Alexa comes to the realization that nothing is as it seems, even herself. Through this book we watch her inner struggle with herself as she comes to term with who she really is, as well as the outer struggles among the people who are supposed to be allies. Blood Warrior is a captivating book. The characters are so well drawn, you cannot help but want to be happy for them, cry for them, and be upset when they are wronged. Alexa is a teenage girl who has always been a loner, never seeming to fit in, and she ends up with more attention then she ever wanted. Watching her character struggle throughout this book is heart wrenching. You cannot help but lover her and cheer her on. Nelly is such a sweet sister, and the strong bond between Alexa and Nelly is evident. Jackson…well, I love Jackson! He wears his heart on his sleeve and is so good to Alexa you cannot help but love him, too. As for Kayden…there is definitely a strong bond between Alexa and Kayden, but at this point she’s not sure she can trust him. This book is the best .99 I have ever spent! I would have gladly paid more for it and felt it worth the money. I love the author’s writing easy writing style, the plot, and the characters. Blood Warrior was a page turner that left me wanting more. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series to see where it takes Alexa and her friends.

I was lucky enough to win a print copy of this book with a lovel

I was lucky enough to win a print copy of this book with a lovely, personal, inscription from Ms. Gordon, as well as a nice card-stock bookmark with images of all four covers in the series, all courtesy of the Blogiversary Giveaway Day #5. My rating is closer to a 3.5, but as I can't do half marks, I will round up :-) It is worth it.

Alexa and her younger sister Nelly don't lead what anyone would call a typical life. Their mother is a bit 'off' to them, but they always do as she asks. Not only because they love her, but Alexa wonders if her mom isn't borderline nuts. So when their mother refuses to let them ride the bus to or from school, but instead makes them run both ways every day, carrying all of their books, they simply say 'OK' and do it. And for as long as Alexa can remember her mother has been beating her as part of her 'training.' Something her mother will explain to her someday.

Being so odd doesn't stop Nelly from making friends, but Alexa only has one friend. Jackson made friends with Alexa from the beginning and as always been there for her. And one day Alexa will find out that Jackson has known more about her life and world than she ever did.

When Alexa, Nelly, and their mother are attacked by strange creatures their mother demands that Alexa keep Nelly safe by taking her and running to a special place in the forest behind their house. Alexa operates on sheer reflex, killing some of the creatures before they are overwhelmed and forced to flee, leaving their mother behind to fight the creatures by herself. Somehow, with the help of Nelly and Jackson, Alexa manages to get all three of them to the safe hiding place her mother had just recently shown her.

The next day the trio decide it is time to eave their cave and seek help, or at least better shelter. In doing so they stumble into another world. A world where Alexa is revered as the last of a race thought to be extinct, and where Nelly's secret could be the death of her if it is ever found out. And Jackson, well he no longer has to keep his secret from anyone, including the sisters, since he literally fits right in to this new world they've stumbled into.

The world crafting really picks up once the trio step into a new reality. Though Ms. Gordon also does an excellent job of describing the mundane, everyday world of the reader as well. And her characters are so much more than lines on paper - they are multidimensional, something you certainly don't find in every book that you pick up. Her story has a solid arc that doesn't seem to have any noticeable plateaus, which makes for a pleasant ride filled with everything from the mundane to the absolutely magical. As the characters grow, so to does the story. With each added layer everything becomes more tightly interconnected, which makes the discoveries at the end of the book that much more shocking and unbelievably startling. Now all I have to do is make it to my next paycheck to get books two, three, and four when it comes out (Half Black Soul, The Rise, & Redemption respectively)! Luckily the wait was all of one day, so now I own the other three books in the series. So many books, so little time - why is it that my employer just doesn't understand this?? LOL.

Reviewed by Leah Gonzalez for Readers' Favorite

Alexa’s mother trains her to be a fighter every day of her life and never tells her why or what for. All her mother tells her is to trust and protect her younger sister Nelly. When vicious supernatural creatures attack them at their home, Alexa has no choice but to leave her mother to fight off these creatures and get Nelly to safety. Later she finds out that she is the last of an elite race, a Warrior, and she finds herself in a hidden world of supernatural races — mostly of vampires and werewolves. Most of them seem to think she is the savior they have all been waiting for, but Alexa has no idea what she is supposed to save them from. She struggles with her new world and tries to find out more about what she is while learning who to trust and how to control the raging warrior inside her. Fast-paced and exciting, this book had my attention right from the beginning. I enjoy strong, bad-ass and no-nonsense heroines and Alexa is certainly one of those. I like that she struggles with herself, with who she wants to be and who she can be. She has the great capacity for doing good or evil and she knows it. I also like her relationship with her sister Nelly who is an interesting character in herself. Their bond is strong and Alexa is able to control herself more when Nelly is there.

I also appreciate that the author tackles vampires and werewolves in a different way. I like the concept of several vampire races with specific attributes and of different supernatural races — in this case, vampires and werewolves - living with each other. I also like that the author included a political aspect into his version of the supernatural world. You can read between the lines that it all boils down to power after all — which race rules which and who wields the greatest power. There are only a couple of things that I really don’t care for in this book. One is the blood-sharing scene. I think it took away from the uniqueness of the author’s concept of vampires. Yes, I can accept that blood is essential to vampires in all versions of storytelling, but for me that particular kind of scene is so overused in all vampire books. The second thing is the love triangle. I was just hoping for something different. But, overall, this is an enjoyable read and I am looking forward to reading the second book of this series.

    Great

I usually am not a great fan of YA but this story is different. It doesn't have the usual whiny angst found in most YA stories. Yes there is sort of a love triangle but it is believable to see why. I love Alexa---Strong, smart, loyal and caring. She knows how to bring it and makes no apologies for it. I have purchased the other two books available and look forward to going along with Alexa and gang on their journey.

    “I’ll make them.” ~Alexa
    “And when you can’t?” ~Kayden
My answer came before I had a chance to really consider what I was saying. “Then, I’ll kill them. I’ll kill them all.” ~Alexa

    TOTAL BADA$$! I love Alexa!!!!!

When Alexa defends her sisters honor by knocking out the school bully she expects to go home and face the wrath of her mother. Instead she gets something different and unexpected from her mother... And that something will save her and her little sister Nelly's life the very next day.

“What am I?” My voice came out in a whisper, so I was surprised when Olivia answered.

After vampires attack her house she leaves her mother and flees in order to protect her little sister. Alexa, Nelly and Jackson, Alexa's best friend are now on the run from the vampires. Once safe Alexa starts to ask questions and discovers that she is no mere human girl. She is a WARRIOR. And the last of her race/kind. After receiving directions to The Hidden City Alexa, Nelly and Jackson discover people like themselves. Vampires, Werewolves and Warriors.

Met at the gates by warriors seeking to kill any intruders Alexa explains their sudden appearance at The Hidden City. They're granted an audience with the queen and her council and soon after are given permission to stay and attend school. Alexa is told that in order for her to attend warrior school she must fight in the arena. This does not sit well with Alexa but she agrees to it any way and wins her place and the rank of the warrior she defeated.

It does not take long for Alexa to realize that something is not right in The Hidden City. And her mothers written words echo in her mind
    'Everyone has an ulterior motive.'

When you start the book you realize Alexa is different and that things are more than they seem. You learn along with her that she may very well be The One who saves the people of The Hidden City. The problem is who exactly is in need of her help and why do they believe she is going to do it.

'But these two places, within the same walls, had similarities. They both seemed to believe that they were in need of rescue, despite their extreme differences. It was obvious that the villagers needed saving, but was it possible that both peoples were slaves in different ways?'
    ~Alexa's internal monologue

It's clear that she is looked upon as a savior yet she struggles to understand why.

Example- check out this conversation with Alexa and the librarian, Olivia

“Did you find the answers you were looking for?” she asked.
    I released a heavy breath.
    “I can’t honestly say. I… I don’t know what I found.”
    “Yes, I believe you do.”
I glanced around me and lowered my voice.
“You don’t… you don’t think it’s me, do you? The girl mentioned in the journal? I mean, it can’t be, right?”
“Do you think it is?” she asked.

    Thoughts
    Dear readers,
I heard the book was good but it still caught me by surprise. I loved it, the author managed to suck me in on the very first page when I was introduced to Alexa. The story has great pacing with plenty of action. I thoroughly enjoyed the world building and the characters it brought with it. It has lots of witty banter and guys vying for Alexa's attention.
The romance was very YA and did not play a big role. However you can see the love triangle brewing with two really HOT guys; Kayden and Jackson.
    Both are swoon worthy!
A character fave for me was Nelly, I want to know more about her and her gifts. I really hope she plays a bigger role in the next book.

In Blood Warrior Gordon introduces you to a unique paranormal world that will leave you wanting to know more. And I am happy that this is a series because I. NEED. MORE.

    My Ratings
Characters- Lovable with the exemption of a few
Writing style- Original with good world building
Plot/Storyline- Distinctive with great plot twist
    Steam Factor- PG-13
Overall- I loved it!! And I recommend it to all YA Paranormal lovers!!!
