Harrison's venture into the graphic novel format is a prequel to her Hollows series about vampires, witches, and werewolves living among humans in modern-day Cincinnati. Blood Work is not a stand-alone piece, and a reader with no knowledge of the series will be lost from the beginning, even with the brief introduction to the city's history and the nonhumans revealing themselves to "save humanity from a deadly virus." Blood Work is the story of young Rachel Morgan, series protagonist, when she first meets Ivy Tamwood, a fellow runner for Inderland Security, the organization of nonhumans policing other nonhumans throughout the city. Harrison spends a lot of time trying to convey the sexual tensions and vampires' blood lust between many characters. Clearly, these steamy romantic encounters are what her fans enjoy and make this book best suited to a mature audience. The artwork is a great complement to the text, as the vampires' auras can be seen when they lose control, exposing their inner emotions to the reader as the dialogue continues. The art is somewhat inconsistent, sometimes making it difficult to tell which minor character is which from one frame to another. In line with the steamy romance and blood lust, nearly every spread has at least one frame dominated by a gratuitous glimpse of someone's ample breasts. While it is not a book to suggest to a new fan of paranormal romance, it will likely draw in plenty of Harrison's current fans to get a peek of the Hollows in full color. Reviewer: Rochelle Garfinkel

Meet the Author

Kim Harrison
Kim Harrison, author of the New York Times bestselling Hollows urban fantasy series, was born and raised in Michigan. After receiving a bachelor of science degree, she moved to South Carolina with her husband and two boys, recently returning north to escape the heat. In addition to writing the Hollows books, she is the author of the bestselling Madison Avery young-adult series. Harrison is a member of both the Romance Writers of America and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. When not at her desk, she is likely digging in her yard or remodeling her Victorian home.

Pedro Maia recently finished college with a degree in art. Blood Work is one of his first full-length projects. He lives in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
 
Gemma Magno was inspired to draw by anime and manga, and received a Presidential Award after winning several art competitions. She lives in the Phillipines.

Biography

Bestselling paranormal fantasy author Kim Harrison went all the way through school with nary a thought of becoming a writer. A biology major in college, she took only the required English courses needed to graduate. So when the writing bug hit her later in life, she found herself at a real disadvantage with grammar, spelling, and other basic weapons in the scribbler's arsenal. However, her love of books was her saving grace. Always a voracious reader, Harrison instinctively recognized the role of plot, pacing, and character development in good storytelling. She set about writing with great enthusiasm and plugged away for the better part of decade, until she was able to bring her skills up to par.

Harrison's debut novel grew out of frustration with a growing pile of rejection notices. In an attempt to get publishers' attention, she set out to craft something deliberately weird and edgy. She conceived a motley cast of vampires, werewolves, pixies, and witches, including a sexy bounty hunter named Rachel Morgan, and threw them together in a short story. Then, her agent introduced her to editor Diana Gill, and together they refined and expanded Harrison's idea into a full length novel.

Published in 2004, Dead Witch Walking became a bestseller, launched a blockbuster series, and catapulted Harrison into a pantheon of paranormal superstars that includes Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, Christine Feehan, and Sherrilyn Kenyon. As if to validate her inclusion in these ranks, Harrison's stories have also been included in several bestselling paranormal collections.

  • Harrison claims that her muse exists in music. In our exclusive interview, she explained, "Music moves society more than most people realize. In my opinion, it's a soft manipulator of influence and change. I love the power of the musician who composes and performs. I envy their ability to put a nugget of truth in three minutes of sweat and emotional outpouring, colored entirely from their thoughts. And I'll admit that if I can, I'll steal that nugget of truth, study it, facet it, polish it, and place it in my writing."

  • On her MySpace page, Kim lists the following as her heroes: "My parents. Anyone who pursues their dreams when no one believes they can reach them. Single moms and dads."

  • Rachel Morgan and her otherworldly cohorts exist in and around an alternate version of Cincinnati, Ohio -- a "little big city" Harrison was familiar with from her Midwestern youth. She always tries to incorporate "Cincy" sights into her series novels, so readers are likely to find allusions to Eden Park, the Cincinnati Zoo, and other local neighborhoods and landmarks.

  • As a tribute to one of her favorite actor/directors, Harrison has given some of her Rachel Morgan novels titles that play on well-known Clint Eastwood films: For a Few Demons More, Every Which Way but Dead, The Outlaw Demon Wails, etc.

      Free samples suck!

      I have all the hollows books and will probably end up buying this one BUT I wanted to check out the style of art before buying , the free sample gives you nothing. I don,t know why they even offer free samples it usually ehds up like this no real example of what your getting at least in a bookstore you can randomly flip through and get a taste of the books.

      I definitely enjoyed reading Kim's newest book. I had a hard time putting it down and even carried it in the kitchen. A must have!

      Great Graphic Novel!

      Graphic Novels are not my normal read. Most of my experience being comic books at a younger age. That said, I really enjoyed this book.
      It takes us back in the Hollow series to when Rachel and Ivy first met on the job. They are at odds and trying to learn what the other has to offer.
      I would definitely recommend to anyone reading the Hollow series.

      This Hollows graphic novel is a great urban fantasy

      In Cincinnati, four decades since the Turn, Inderland Security polices the no-humans. Working for I.S. Ivy Tamwood is irate over her demotion from homicide to street cop and working for a low blood Denon the ghoul. She turns livid when Denon introduces her to her new partner Rachel Morgan the earth witch. Besides not wanting to work with a witch, Ivy also loathes babysitting the new runner.

      Denon assigns the pair with running down drug dealers. Under a bridge, Rachel talks with Sharps the troll about the nearby corpse of a werewolf. The hit looks like that of a master vampire. While Ivy says not their problem, Rachel insists they investigate. They get into a bit of a tangle and Ivy finds she wants to taste the witch's blood. However, Ivy knows she underestimates her newbie partner when the witch fights back and points out the killer is not a vamp bit a powerful witch. She further explains someone is using dark magic, but erred with the werewolf sacrifice in human form. The pair begins to investigate though knowing Denon will counsel them.

      This Hollows graphic novel is a great urban fantasy that tells the tale of the first meeting and patrol/case between the witch and the vampire. The story line contains the essence of the series, but enhanced by the excellent muted colored illustrations of Pedro Maia and Gemma Magno. Fans of the Hollows will appreciate Kim Harrison's wonderful first encounter as angry Ivy and goody two shoes Rachel bare their "fangs" at each other and some nasty inhuman slime.

      Kind of disappointed

      Besides having a Simple Touch, I own a MacBook Pro and an iPad. I could not view this on either Apple device. I had to return the book, unread.

      Ratchel is wanted, but not in a way she would like. From the first page it will be hard to put down.

      In this on going Gothic Action Adventure Ratchel Morgan has to decide what she will become as she relizes that being an earth witch is no longer an option. As her powers increase she has become a target and she relies on friends to help her escape yet again, this time from a sect of witches who are out for blood. Ratchels relationship with Trent becomes more confusing as he takes part in her protection. This book will leave you longing for the series to continue.

      Joy

      I have a nook tablet. This graphic novel showed up well on it. However, I wasn't a big fan of the art in this book, it left a lot to be desired, more like soft porn. I also feel that the story line wasn't up to par. I won't purchase another Kim Harrison graphic novel. Hopefully I am not so jaded as to discontinue reading further novels by her.
