Meet the Author

Sidney Sheldon

Novelist and screenwriter Sidney Sheldon remains one of the world's top bestselling authors. His books have sold more than 300 million copies and have been published in dozens of languages—Guinness World Records heralds him as one of the most translated authors in the world. He is also the only writer to have won an Oscar, a Tony, and an Edgar award.

Biography

Best known today for his exciting blockbuster novels, Sidney Sheldon was the author of The Best Laid Plans, Nothing Lasts Forever, The Stars Shine Down, The Doomsday Conspiracy, Memories of Midnight, The Sands of Time, Windmills of the Gods, If Tomorrow Comes, Master of the Game, Rage of Angels, Bloodline, A Stranger in the Mirror, and The Other Side of Midnight. Almost all of them were number-one international bestsellers. His first book, The Naked Face, was acclaimed by the New York Times as "the best first mystery of the year" and received an Edgar Award. Most of his novels became major feature films or TV miniseries, and there are more than 275 million copies of his books in print throughout the world.

Before he became a novelist, Sheldon had already won a Tony Award for Broadway's Redhead and an Academy Award for The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer. He has written the screenplays for twenty-three motion pictures, including Easter Parade (with Judy Garland) and Annie Get Your Gun. In addition, he penned six other Broadway hits and created three long-running television series, including Hart to Hart and I Dream of Jeannie, which he also produced. A writer who delighted millions with his award-winning plays, movies, novels, and television shows, Sidney Sheldon reigned as one of the most popular storytellers of all time.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Sheldon:

"When I was 17, I was happy to be working in a drugstore, because I could steal enough sleeping pills to commit suicide."

"I have bi-polar syndrome and was not aware what was disturbing me until I received an Academy Award and went to see a psychiatrist."

"I have worked 7 days a week as long as I can remember. A business manager of mine gave me $25 worth of tennis lessons. I went down to my tennis court and we played once a week. I really enjoyed it. Playing with the pro one day, my teacher said to me that the money had been spent and did I want to continue. I started to say yes, then I realized that I didn't want to be out on the tennis court. I wanted to be in my office writing. That was 25 years ago and I haven't been on my tennis court since."

    Interestingly Disappointing

I liked the back drop of the story. It showed how a family business can change from generation to generation. What was loved and valued by the one who worked hard to obtain it. Is taken for granted and not valued by those who it is freely given. It also felt like the author threw in too many distubed characters, many of which did nothing for the story just wasted pages. Then it seemed that the number of pages quota was met and there was a mad dash to end the story Wy

    Sexy Mayhem

Another amazing read by Sheldon. Just fantastic. I could not put it down. He put the right amount of characters and their so demanding personalities smack in the middle of mayhem. It kept me guessing all along. This is again an absolutely thrill seeking, keep you guessing on your toes type of drama you just get stuck in. Loved it!

    Good, but not Satisfying

I read this book when it first came out in the 70's and loved it. For years I have considered it my favorite book. I reread it recently after 20 years and I was very disappointed. Except for Elizabeth, the characters are one-dimensional. Rhys' character was so superficial. I know Sidney Sheldon did that so the reader would suspect Rhys as the murderer but I still wish he would have written more from Rhys' point of view. Another reviewer likened this book to a 'soap-opera' and 'mind candy' and that is exactly what it is.

    Sheldon-Coated Candy

This who-dunit book is like mind candy, pure pleasure but no nutrition. It's like a soap opera script digested down. You won't learn anything, grow wiser, or get experience by reading it, but your emotions will be satisfied as the stable of stereotyped characters moves through their paces to a great ending. This is a book that everybody wishes they could write but only a master like Sheldon can pull it off. You won't be able to put it down since the plot picks up as the book goes along. By the end you will literally be racing to turn pages to see what befalls the book's main character, Elizabeth. You will probably not guess who did it until you are told. And you will be satisfied, very satisfied with the fairy tale happy ending, which convincingly dovetails with the beginning.
