Overview

A gripping story based on the Siegfried and Brunnhilde tale from Nordic myth.

Sigurd has a fabulous but frightening future predicted. To start with, he must leave everything he knows to go and fight a dragon and from there descend into the Underworld. Sounds bad enough, but when you know that the dragon lives on a futuristic, industrially-ruined moonscape that was once Hampstead Heath, the scene is set for a brutal fight on an epic scale. Unhappily for Sigurd, he meets the love of his life in the underworld, and his efforts to rescue his lover will cause heartache and grief for both of them, and anyone who ever meets them.

Editorial Reviews

KLIATT - Paula Rohrlick
In this gory, gripping reworking of the Icelandic Volsunga Saga, set in a future world where genetic engineering has blurred the lines between men, beasts, and machines, 15-year-old Sigurd is the last surviving member of the Volson clan. His father, King Sigmund, had a knife that was given to him by the god Odin; from its dust a magical sword is forged, with which Sigurd sets off to kill the dragon Fafnir. London has been "nuked...flat," and Sigurd must go to Hel and back to bring unity to his country once again. He falls in love with Bryony, and with Gudrun, and tragedy, of course, ensues. It's helpful but not necessary to have read the prequel, Bloodtide, and to have a strong stomach, too. This is a brutal tale, told from multiple points of view, that includes up-to-date profanities and sex (including gay sex) as well as a great deal of violence. It's also exciting and full of action, and mature fantasy and SF fans will find it an intense and involving read.
