Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
"Great artists are often high-strung and teetering dangerously on the brink of emotional breakdown." In his strip "Bloom County," cartoonist Berkeley Breathed didn't hesitate to make fun of his own aspirations and personal foibles. Apparently, his self-satirical tone worked: The comic became a Pulitzer Prize-winning classic even though it ran for less than nine years (1980-89). This omnibus collection presents the "Bloom County" saga in color reproductions enhanced by "context pages," which provide Breathed's comments on individual episodes. The first volume of a definitive collection.
Library Journal
Bloom County, that satirical and widely loved fixture of 1980s newspapers (and winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning), has receded from public notice of late. Luckily, we have this welcome reminder of its greatness, the first of five planned volumes reprinting the strip's complete run (with Sunday installments in color), including many strips never before reprinted. At first, Breathed cycles through a temporary cast of small-town Midwestern oddballs while contrasting precocious liberal schoolboy Milo Bloom with his militarist grandfather and pitting liberated schoolteacher Bobbi Harlow against obnoxious would-be suitor Steve Dallas. Then political jokes become more common, with a Doonesbury influence (noted by Breathed in revealing annotations) evident. Finally, after a brief early cameo, the naive but lovable Opus the penguin joins the cast in January 1982, and the strip begins to hit its hilarious stride. VERDICT Print quality is variable; some strips here are actually better reproduced in Loose Tails (1983), the very first Bloom County collection. But the gags are funny from day one and only improve from there. Few strips deserve the "complete collection" treatment more; highly recommended.—S.R.

    Ebook version sucks

2 pages per page swipe and having to resize on EVERY SINGLE PAGE SWIPE is a miserable way to read what is otherwise comic strip gold.

Save yourself a lot of grief and skip on these until they get either the reader right or the digital version into a usable form.

Get the Hardcover, not the e-book.

I love Bloom County & always have. And while I enjoyed the content, the layout of the ebook for nook was terrible. When you hold the book horizontally, you get 2 wide pages instead of just one, making it almost impossible to read. You can of course enlarge it, but then you are stuck swiping back and forth to read the panes. Get the hard cover, but I can't recommend the ebook.

Great to reread and still relevant today.

Berkley has always been a great writer/cartoonist and getting to reread it from the start is a great reminder of past history. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it, or something like that.....

    Simply the best!!!

This has to be my all time favorite comic strip!! I can read and re-red them and they still bring a smile to my face. This is a fans dream come true. I can't wait until the second volume to come out.

    Bloom County is the best!

I've been waiting years for a complete Bloom County set. Breathed adds the occasional margin note for your reading pleasure. I just finished reading volume one and hope the rest of the volumes roll out soon.

    Better than the first volume

I like the second volume better than the first for several reasons (not that the first isn't a funny, timeless classic) As Mr. Breathed pointed out, by this point the strip was more focused, centered and legible. And there were more comments by BB (I'd like to see even more in the next volume) and less comments by the publisher, I think most Bloom County fans are familiar with the references made.

And a note to Mr Breathed: Berke...I mean Berkeley...I'm sure your readers know who Sgt. Phil Esterhaus was. I tend to think that Bloom County and Hill Street Blues humor quite similar. In fact I'm surprised there were no parodies done...Bloom County Blues perhaps?

    What need I say?

It's freakin' Bloom County on good paper in nice hard covers and with snide side remarks by Breathed himself! I'm a happy 80s child. This is heaven.

The Best Thing to Happen to Comic Strip Collections Since Comic Strip Collections!

Bloom County is one of the best comic strips of all time. As other strips such as The Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes received the "Complee" collection treatment. I waited patiently for Bloom County to get one. Last year, it happened.

This series is definitely some of the best that IDW has done. All the strips, in chronological order, with commentary by Berke Breathed, all wrapped in a beautifully done packaging. If you are a fan of the strip, this series is a muct have for you, even if you own every Bloom County collection put out prior!

    Bloom County, Volume 1

I faithfully read Berkeley Breathed's strip Bloom County, and the follow-up strips Outland and Opus, every day while it was running. I loved these characters and still do to this day. Breathed's commentary on the events of the day was always a little on the snarky side, but it was always done intelligently. It is clear in these early strips that Breathed is trying to find his voice. There are some characters that you can tell just don't mesh as well with the evolving feel of the strip, and eventually these characters just melt out of existence. It is also fun to see how the characters that did manage to make the cut evolved from their early beginnings. Towards the end of this first volume, which ends in mid 1982, Breathed has clearly found the voice of the strip and his characters and is beginning to hone the comic wit and satire that will eventually make this strip great.

When I heard that they were finally publishing a complete collection of the strips, I was ecstatic. The volume itself is very nicely presented, and the strips look great reprinted. All in all, I believe that there will be five volumes produced altogether, and I'm hoping that these will include the subsequent strips Outland and Opus, as some of these strips have never been reprinted before.

    great compilation

Despite owning most, if not all, the individual books on Bloom County, I found this book had many hidden treasures.
