Humor saves the series from being mediocre

I was hesitant to pick up volume 2 after reading volume 1 but I'm very glad I did. I was first charmed by the original story of a simple gift of a plant causing someone to fall in love that was in the author's Love and Trap manga. Blooming Darling follows a very common outline of falling in love, adjusting to the demands of a relationship, and then having that relationship tested by external forces. Unfortunately, I don't think Ms. Yamamoto succeeded greatly in either endearing her characters to the reader, or challenging common conventions of the genre that would elevate the story beyond anything a seasoned reader of BL is used to. This volume uses one of the plot devices I most hate by trotting out an ex-girlfriend. However, her character did end up being a bit atypical so I ended up not hating that phase of the story. For all the detraction's though, I found myself laughing through nearly the entire book. The jokes, expressions, and timing in the panels are very well done and frankly saved the series for me. I actually now like this title much more after the first volume and will be certain to re-read it in the future. I'd recommend it to BL fans who are just starting to grow their collections and like slice of life stories.
