Booklist

"This is a book for unapologetic flower lovers, people who want lush green and bursts of color in their yards year-round."
Library Journal
A lifelong gardener, Bloom (president, Blooms of Bressingham Nursery, Norfolk, UK; Blooms of Bressingham Garden Plants) here recommends almost 400 perennials and grasses suitable for the home garden. He begins with a section on garden design followed by specifics on choosing plants and general cultural information. He also describes a core group of 12 "tried-and-tested" plants that he often uses in his own garden designs. The heart of the book, the "Directory of Recommended Perennials and Grasses," is arranged alphabetically by scientific name, with each entry including common name(s), the plant's native regions, detailed descriptions, sitting information, culture, size, U.S.D.A. hardiness zones, and further recommended species or cultivars. Stunning color photographs enhance every page. He concludes the book with various lists of plants such as drought-resistant plants or plants for small gardens. VERDICT The authoritative text, vivid color photographs, and carefully selected plants—many of which are available at U.S. nurseries—make this an excellent choice for American gardeners in zones 3–9 looking for some of that magic British gardening wisdom.—Sue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL

Meet the Author

Adrian Bloom is a nurseryman, gardener and writer, and president of the famous Blooms of Bressingham nursery in Norfolk, England. Adrian's father founded the Blooms nursery in 1926. The father and son are internationally known for the unique varieties of perennials that they personally introduced to many American gardeners. Adrian also shares with his father the distinction of holding the Royal Horticultural Society's coveted Victoria Medal of Honour. The Blooms are the only father and son ever to be honored this way at the same time. Adrian was also one of the youngest horticulturists ever to be awarded the medal.

For 30 years Adrian has developed the superb "Foggy Bottom" garden, adjacent to Bressingham Gardens, which exemplifies the art of successful plant associations. The six-acre garden demonstrates the heart of his philosophy, planning and planting for continual change in the garden. This change ensures enduring interest throughout the year, whatever the size of the garden. "Foggy Bottom" is known for its display of year-round color and for having one of the largest collections of conifers in the United Kingdom. Bloom specialized in conifers early in his career, and uses his expertise to creatively combine conifers with companion plants.

Adrian travels all over the world developing the Blooms of Bressingham business and finding and researching suitable new garden plants. He appears on television frequently, and has written several gardening books, including Blooms of Bressingham Garden Plants. He continues to educate the gardening public about plants and their uses in even the smallest gardens.

    A Cornucopia of Flowering Ideas

One of the best aspects of a perennial garden is its ability to thrill us with a cornucopia of blooms with very little additional effort on our part. Adrian Bloom shows gardeners how to create outdoor "rooms" of flowering drama, highlighted by bursts of color, texture and height certain to thrill even the casual observer.

Using the "sacred twelve plants", such as black mondo grass, hosta Francee, geranium Rozanne, bugbane, silver grass and crocosmia Lucifer, for example, the author showcases a host of appealing gardening options. Whether one has a small plot of land or acres of private sanctuary, this book will help any gardener make the most of it.
