Overview

John Steinbeck won a Pulitzer Prize in 1940 for The Grapes of Wrath and also wrote such classics as East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, and The Red Pony. In 1962, Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature "for his realistic as well as imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humor and a keen social perception." To this day, Steinbeck remains respected and admired for his depiction of both the positive and the night-marish aspects of the American Dream.
