Overview

Matthias Schubert throughout this CD shows that he learned a great deal from listening to Eric Dolphy. Although he plays tenor, Schubert's speechlike solos and wide interval jumps (like Dolphy) sometimes sound as if he is talking, and one is grabbed from the start by his giddy (if very complex) melodies. Schubert's episodic music, with its unexpected twists and turns, expertly mixes together improvising with lengthy arranged sections, lyricism, advanced swinging and some violent passages. While the brooding ballad "Le Maitre" (which serves as a feature for drummer Tom Rainey's brushwork) is a bit dull, it is easily compensated for by the 34-minute "Blue And Grey Suite" which has its own original logic. The four musicians (which include pianist Simon Nabatov and bassist Lindsey Horner) all display big ears thorughout the date as they constantly react to each other, particularly Schubert (who has an attractive sound on tenor) and Nabatov. Recommended to listeners who enjoy hearing adventurous and unpredictable jazz.
