Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Greene
The Alden family is taking a trip to a deserted island in the South Seas. Along the way they pack, attend school on the ship, and find their own native foods on the island. But when a Myna bird and a fish with a button inside offer clues suggesting the deserted island may not be as deserted as they believe, what, or who, will the family encounter next? This book is a reprint of the 1961 original. While it does not contain any artificially updated passages to account for things like brand names or technology, the story is still relevant for today's youth. However, the wholesome tone of the passages and goofy dialog make the language a bit dated. The book is number six in a series of "Boxcar Children Mysteries," but the story stands by itself without having read the previous titles. More of an adventure story than a mystery, the text contains interesting facts and digressions on subjects such as ship terminology, vitamin C, plankton, and breadfruit. There are a few too many characters of which to keep track, but this does not hinder reading as the children are basically indistinguishable. Still, the number of children and their constant commenting on each other's statements does not take away from the spirit of the story. The illustrations are retro pen drawings that appear throughout the pages. While a bit out of style, this story allows children aged seven to twelve to experience new things and learn interesting nature facts about a world that is rarely seen, ultimately helping to establish a new generation of fans for the "Boxcar Children Mysteries." Meet the Author

The Boxcar Children Series was created by Gertrude Chandler Warner, a teacher, when she realized that there were few, if any, books for children that were both easy and fun to read. She drew on her own experiences in writing the mysteries. As a child, she had spent hours watching trains near her home, and often dreamed about what it would be like to live in a caboose or freight car. In each story, she chose a special setting and introduced unpredictable, unusual or eccentric characters, to help highlight the Aldens’ independence and resourcefulness. Miss Warner lived in Putnam, Massachusetts until her death in 1979.

This book is about a family that goes on a vacation. On this vacation there is someone there. They know that someone is there because it eats their food and leaves trails.
