Children's Literature - Michael Jung
Gertrude Chandler Warner's popular 1940s book series "The Boxcar Children" gets the graphic novel treatment in Blue Bay Mystery, which adapts the sixth book in the series into comic book form. Many fans know the basic story—siblings Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden once lived in a boxcar on their own, until they were adopted by their wealthy grandfather who takes them on adventures to exotic places. For Blue Bay Mystery, this exotic place happens to be a desert island on which grandfather's sailor friend Lars was once stranded. After arranging for safe passage to the island, the Alden kids have fun playing Robinson Crusoe and exploring wildlife and scenery. But when the kids find a shipwrecked boat on the island and a myna bird with some cryptic messages, they begin to wonder—could someone else be hiding on the island? Like the chapter books, this graphic novel about the Boxcar Children is a quick read, and fans will enjoy seeing comic book depictions of the Alden kids. For fans who prefer adventure stories with greater danger and higher stakes, however, this tale is fairly tame. Reviewer: Michael Jung
