Barnes & Noble - Dave Gil de Rubio
The surf is definitely up in the summer of 2002, from the boob tube, where Sheryl Crow rides the waves in her video for "Soak up the Sun," to the big screen, where the romantic adventure film Blue Crush traces the path of four surfer girls in Hawaii. The movie's soundtrack also makes a strong splash with a sizzling blend of rock, soul, hip-hop, and reggae. The steamy rock and soul comes from Lenny Kravitz, whose "If I Could Fall in Love" pits screaming guitars against a chugging beat; Nikka Costa, with the Sly Stone-inspired funk of "Everybody Got Their Something"; and N.E.R.D., who merge hard-edged beats and heavy guitar riffs on a remix of "Rock Star." The surf is definitely up in the summer of 2002, from the boob tube, where Sheryl Crow rides the waves in her video for "Soak up the Sun," to the big screen, where the romantic adventure film Blue Crush traces the path of four surfer girls in Hawaii. The movie's soundtrack also makes a strong splash with a sizzling blend of rock, soul, hip-hop, and reggae. The steamy rock and soul comes from Lenny Kravitz, whose "If I Could Fall in Love" pits screaming guitars against a chugging beat; Nikka Costa, with the Sly Stone-inspired funk of "Everybody Got Their Something"; and N.E.R.D., who merge hard-edged beats and heavy guitar riffs on a remix of "Rock Star." From here, the needle remains in the red as Outkast-inspired hip-hoppers Blestenation turn Bananarama's "Cruel Summer" on its head with plenty of scratching and fly rhymes. The surf calms somewhat on tracks from British electronica favorites Zero 7 (the trip-hop lite "Destiny") and dream rockers Doves (the ethereal, cinematic "Firesuite"). And finally, a fun-in-the-sun flick would be incomplete without a dose of island flavor, which arrives in the form of Beenie Man's bouncy anthem "Party Hard," Chicken's rock-steady "Big Love," and Damian Marley's "And You Be Loved," an update of father Bob's classic "Could You Be Loved." Like a beach with killer waves, this is one collection that you'll want to hang ten with again and again.
All Music Guide - Jason D. Taylor
Summer film soundtracks are fairly predictable, as one can expect to find several pop
ock icons or hip-hop superstars displaying their hit singles, albeit in remix format. Surprisingly, Blue Crush has a soundtrack propelled by lesser-known artists, which is relieving. Highlights include N.E.R.D.'s "Rock Star," which is given the remix treatment courtesy of Jason Nevins, and Beth Orton's dreamy "Daybreaker," which is simply scintillating.
