School Library Journal
Gr 11 Up—Orphaned at birth, 15-year-old Rin Okumura and his twin brother, Yukio, were raised in a monastery by Father Fujimoto. Hot-tempered Rin has spent most of his academic career getting into fights, while Yukio has received a scholarship to the prestigious True Cross Academy. One fateful brawl changes Rin's life as he learns that he is the son of Satan. Although demonic power runs through his veins, he vows to become an exorcist so that no one will die or suffer because of him. Taking the familiar premise of the powerful yet undisciplined novice seeking revenge, Kato crafts a highly entertaining story filled with exorcists, myriad demons, rituals, and other magical objects. The plot combines mystical elements with bursts of demon-fighting action. The quirky and likable characters act as humorous and intriguing guides to this strange world. Demons with burning flames, barbed tails, and long tongues and nails appear more creepy than horrific. The excellent artwork with its Victorian and Gothic touches offers detailed interiors and architecture. Attractive character designs showcase the exorcists-in-training, decked out in their fashionable school uniforms and even cooler demon-hunting accessories (skeleton keys, soul swords). This witty blend of mystery, melodrama, and action will appeal to fans of such supernatural manga as CLAMP's xxxholic (Del Rey, 2004) or Katsura Hoshino's "D.Gray-man" books (Viz Media). With its engrossing storytelling and detailed artwork, this atmospheric book will be appreciated by readers and aspiring artists.—June Shimonishi, Torrance Public Library, CA

So one day when I was on my nook and needed something to read, I decided to look to see if bn had some manga for nook. So I looked it up and was excited to see tha they did. Although I was disappointed that they did not have Fairy Tail (recommeneded) I saw that they had ao no exorcist (Blue Exorcist) and immediately bought the first four volumes. I love this series so much! It is one of the beat manga I have ever read. If you buy it, you will not be disappointed by it! :D (sorry for any spelling errors)

I've always been a fan of manga and am in fact president of the manga club at my school and out of all the manga I have read this is quickly becoming my new favorite! It is full of action and some slight back story, just enough to explain, which is perfect in my mind. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes manga or anyone who like action/fantasy stories!

I don't have a lot of time or money to dedicate to manga like i used to, but this one is definitely worth it. The art is amazing, the story is great, and the characters have depth. Definitely one of the best popular manga out there.

Promising start to a series I'll read more from. The art work is really, really good. One of the characters reminded me of Xerxes Break from Pandora Hearts. Anyway recommend this first volume.

A manga about family, destiny, and personal choices, Blue Exorcist has already set up a strong story with a distinct cast of characters in the first volume. The world, though only first touched on, is vast and intricate. Rin is your typical shonen main character, but his world gives him a difficult role to navigate -- being the biological son of Satan, but the raised son of an exorcist priest. If you enjoy paranormal drama with some humor, as well as beautiful art with detailed scenery, please pick this up!

Rin and his fraternal twin, Yukio, are being raised by Father Fujimoto. Rin gets in fights. Yukio has plans to be a doctor. Suddenly it is revealed Father Fujimoto is an exorcist, and he is killed saving Rin, who is part demon and the son of Satan. Yukio is not part demon due to being under-weight and sickly at birth. Follow their adventures as Rin and Yukio learn to deal with each other in their new capacities, Yukio has secrets too. The graphics are concise and crisply drawn. There is also an occasional anime flair to some cells. Dialogue and action assist with character and narrative development. Overall, an interesting read.
