Overview

Pianist Jessica Williams' recorded output surged during the final decade of the 20th century, with most of her best work appearing on the Canadian label Jazz Focus. Accompanied by her favorite rhythm section, bassist Dave Captein and drummer Mel Brown, and tenor saxophonist Scott Hall (on two of the eight songs), Williams sticks primarily to her fascinating originals. The full quartet is heard on "Blue Fire," an exotic modal number featuring the leader adding strummed and plucked piano strings as well as a little percussion, too. Highlights among the trio tracks include "The Vision," a graceful waltz that seems partly inspired by McCoy Tyner, her playful "Blues 2K," and an elegant memorial tribute to a pianist who died prematurely, "Kenny Kirkland." Hall returns for the spunky duo rendition of "Everything Happens to Me," which is inexplicably credited to Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer instead of Matt Dennis and Tom Adair. Recommended.
