Overview

Each of the extraordinary hand-crocheted afghans displayed here in magnificent photos is a blue-ribbon winner. They've all taken the top prize at one of America's state fairs-the prime public venue for showing off the best of our nation's traditional crafts. The styles, colors, and patterns are as varied as the folks who fashioned them, ranging from an afghan with an elegant white-on-white country design to one that has a wildly kaleidoscopic motif. Crocheters can recreate these wonderful items at home, thanks to patterns, detail shots, and instructions, and experience the charm that makes the state fair such a special part of American culture. Scattered throughout the text are fun facts about the fairs, along with new and vintage photos.

I thought that the patterns were outdated and not very inspired. I'm not sure why most of them were blue ribbon winners? I actually tried to return the book but I had missed the return time window. I wish I could say more but it really was just that dull.

This book is beautiful, informative, and inspiring. I have crocheted 2 of the blankets already. There's a lot to choose form in many skill levels. The photograhpy is very pretty too,

THIS BOOK HAS SOME BEAUTIFUL AFGHANS IN IT. WELL WORTH GETTING IF YOU ENJOY CROCHET. VERY HAPPY WITH IT

Unfortunatly, there are many errors in the directions. For example, there are two versions of the same afghan with a heart motif panel and an alternate panel in between. Both patterns are defintly different but the directions for both afghans are exactly the same. Also the person that photographed the pictures obviously is not a crocheter, because some of the afghans are photographed wrong side up. Other than that the book does show off some beautiful talent.

I may be prejudiced because my own afghan submissions are on pages 125 and 132, but I was very surprised and pleased at how well this book turned out. The photographs are beautiful, the graphics are unique and really well done, and the informative factoids about state fairs are very interesting. I never expected that there would be so many different things packed into one book of crocheted afghan patterns. I would recommend adding this title to any library of needlecrafting books.
