Overview

Blue Snake covers a wide variety of subjects in its 79 pages, and it's apparent from the start that the author does not subscribe to the common cultural ideas or cherished beliefs of those in his native United States. The titles of the ten essays are themselves a warning that if you are easily offended you will indeed read them "at you own risk' as the series name suggests. They are:

1. The Blue Snake - Evidence is offered for the existence of a "serpentine mother" who rules the world, and the reader is asked to consider if they have any better evidence for their own gods.

2. The Monsters Among Us - The author explains just how much evil our loved ones (and ourselves) are capable of.

3. How to Quit Your Job - How to be wise about quitting your job, from an expert job-quitter.

4. Why Do They Hate Us? - A fictional story and its relation to the truth provide a basis for understanding why the United States is the target of so much animosity.

5. Punishing the Truth - An alternative to the exclusionary rule is offered.

6. I Have No Duty to My Country - We owe nothing to our country according to this essay, and the author questions the supposed belief in freedom of those who think otherwise.

7. How to Get Rid of Poor People - How well-intentioned (and other) people push the poor away and impoverish them further.

8. The Pleasure of Guilt - It's argued that guilt becomes self-glorification for many people, and that there is a better way to deal with correcting our behavior.

9. Eliminate Social Security - Replace it with a safety net for everyone who needs it, at a much lower cost.

10. War and Words - Could large scale war be a result of the development of language, and of certain words? That's what is hypothesized here.

Blue Snake (22,700 words) is part of the "At Your Own Risk Series" by Steve Gillman. The essays in these books are meant to suggest new ideas, open minds, occasionally entertain, and above all to encourage independent thought.
