Overview

John Coltrane's career was full to bursting with memorable saxophone solos, and one of the most compelling can be found on the title cut of BLUE TRAIN. Recorded while Coltrane was still a couple of years away from the formation of his own group and its subsequent modal jazz explorations -- BLUE TRAIN is solidly in the hard-bop vein of the time. Yet nothing Coltrane put his heart into was ever ordinary, least of all this explosive session. The galvanic tenor solo on "Blue Train," a dark, minor-key blues, may take pride of place due to its brute force and gripping improvisational logic, but Coltrane's work on his original tunes, "Moment's Notice," "Lazy Bird," "Locomotion," and the standard "I'm Old Fashioned" all vie for a close second. Trane's supporting players make up an all-star band in themselves: trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Kenny Drew, and the great rhythm team of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones -- each sounding as primed and ready as they've ever been.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Ken Dryden
How do you improve upon an already classic recording? By adding alternate takes and a CD-ROM program to the original issue. The newly added alternate takes of "Blue Train" (whose piano solo was lifted and spliced into the familiar master take) and "Lazy Bird" are welcome discoveries. The numerous photographs from the session and excerpts of a July 1995 interview with trombonist Curtis Fuller (the only surviving musician from this historic recording session) make this new enhanced CD well worth acquiring, even if you have the earlier CD. Audio interview excerpts from interviews with Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, Johnny Griffin, Roy Haynes, Archie Shepp, and others are also included.
