Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Sean Westergaard
After only being available in heavily edited or bootleg form, Jimi Hendrix's complete performance at the Isle of Wight Festival was finally officially released some 32 years after the fact. Although Hendrix is plagued by equipment problems and audience expectations, and the entire festival had degenerated into something of a debacle by the time Jimi hit the stage as headliner, the sound is fantastic, the packaging and booklet are filled with great photos, and it is the entire performance except for the fade-out of "Midnight Lightning" ending disc one. Jimi's guitar playing is superb in spots, and his wonderful sense of humor is on display throughout. There is a loose, ...

Jimi's guitar playing is superb in spots, and his wonderful sense of humor is on display throughout. There is a loose, at times sloppy, feel to the proceedings, with Hendrix being pretty casual with the lyrics, particularly in "Spanish Castle Magic." Jimi had long since tired of playing his smash hits, even commenting after "Foxey Lady," "Y'all want to hear all those old songs, man? Damn, man. We're just trying to get some other things together." The problem was that much of the new material was under-rehearsed for a live setting, giving some of the newer songs like "Dolly Dagger" and "Ezy Rider" more of a jam feel. But the fact is, Hendrix died way too early, so any great sounding, even mediocre, shows will still be celebrated by fans for the moments of brilliance they contain. Band of Gypsys is still the first pick for live Hendrix, but those who crave more will be quite pleased with Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight.

    Hendrix rules! but...

This is not an example of Jimi at his best! He struggled with equipment issues throughout the gig and as a result his playing came out rather subpar!
Check out the dagger records only release "Live At The Isle Of Fehmarn" which was recorded on September the 6th, 1970. Jimi was in much better form on that day; a better representation of his final tour than this CD.

Still this 11 track version is the one to get since it includes with the exception of "Ezy Ryder", the best moments of the gig and leaves out most of the excess.

Sweet but it covers up bad songs

This is definitely a good cd and I would recommend it. But it covers up some weaker songs at this performance that are on other cd's such as Voodoo Child where Jimi's guitar is woefully out-of-tune and you can hear it.

    Hendrix at his best!!

I strongly suggest you buy this cd, fan or not of Hendrix. There are so many aspects someone like you could appreciate. His lyrics, his guitar work, his voice, his humor. Or, you could just buy the cd and appreciate the whole thing.
