I read this book when I was 8 or 9....this beautiful story has stayed with me all my life. (I am almost 60). I was out taking a walk today and thought about this book...I'm going to buy it now to give to my granddaughter for her next birthday. I hope she loves it as much as I did!

MY REVIEW I GUESS YOU WOULD SAY IS DIFFERENT. THIS STORY WAS PART OF MY ELEMENTARY READING CIRCLE WHEN I WAS EITHER IN THE FOURTH OR FIFTH GRADE ABOUT THE YEAR 1961. I REMEMBER US IN THE CIRCLE AND I WAS VERY MUCH TAKEN IN BY THE STORY OF THE LITTLE GIRL AND HER MOTHER AND THE HARD TIMES THEY WERE GOING THROUGH BUT MOSTLY HOW IMPORTANT AND HOW MUCH THE LITTLE GIRL VALUED THE PLATE. THIS WAS A SCHOOL TEXTBOOK AND SO I NEVER GOT TO KEEP IT AND I DON'T KNOW WHY I NEVER BOUGHT IT. BUT THAT STORY HAS STAYED IN MY HEART FOR MANY, MANY, YEARS. I SORT OF FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE BOOK, BUT LIKE I SAID IT STAYED IN MY HEART. NOW I HAVE ONLY READ THIS BOOK ONCE AND THAT WAS IN MY READING CIRCLE, BUT IT REALLY TOUCHED ME FOREVER. WELL MANY YEARS LATER OF COURSE I GREW UP AND GOT MARRIED AND SEVERAL YEARS LATER OF MARRIAGE MY HUSBAND AND I WERE LOOKING AT DISHES. WE WERE NOT IN THE MARKET TO BUY ANY AND WE HAD PLENTY FROM OUR WEDDING AND HIM BEING IN THE SERVICE. I NEVER NEW UNTIL THEN THERE WAS A PATTERN OUT CALLED "THE BLUE WILLOW" AND IT QUICKLY BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF THAT STORY I LOVED AND STILL LOVE TILL THIS DAY. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THOSE SET OF DISHES, BUT WE HAD SO MANY AND WE COULD NOT AFFORD ANY MORE. WELL, THEY BECAME MY FAVORITE PATTERN EVEN THOUGH I COULD NOT HAVE THEM. EVERY TIME FROM THEN ON WHEN WE WOULD LOOK AROUND IN THE STORES AND LOOK AT DISHES AND SAW MY FAVORITE ONES, I WOULD REMEMBER THE STORY AND HOW IT TOUCHED ME SO. WELL TIME WENT AND LIFE GOES ON. AND AGAIN I HAD FORGOTTEN IN MY MIND BUT NOT MY HEART. ABOUT SIX YEARS OR MAYBE SEVEN YEARS AGO I WAS HELPING OUT IN A FIFTH GRADE ELEMENTARY CLASS AND ONE DAY THE TEACHER WAS READING THAT STORY. OH HOW I SAT LISTENING TO IT SO INTENTIVELY AND REMEMBERING THE DAYS GONE BY WHEN I FIRST FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS STORY. I ALSO THOUOGHT OF THE DISHES, THAT I WANTED BUT DID NOT NEED WHATSOEVER AND COULD NOT AFFORD. MY FAMILY KNEW HOW I FELT ABOUT THOSE DISHES AND WHY. WELL, AGAIN TIME WENT BY, LIFE GOES AND THE STORY WAS AGAIN TUCKED AWAY IN MY HEART. ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO, MY DAUGHTER AND HUSBAND GOT RID OF ME FOR THE DAY. MY DAUGHTER TOOK ME SHOPPING JUST TO LOOK AROUND. WHEN I GOT HOME IT WAS TIME FOR DINNER. HER BEST GIRLFRIEND AND MY HUSBAND MADE THE DINNER (I REALLY DON'T KNOW HOW THEY GOT BY ME). WHEN I GOT HOME IT WAS ALL COMPLETLEY READY AND SERVED. PERFECT TIMING. WHEN I SAT DOWN TO START EATING I WAS SO SUPRISED I WELLED UP IN TEARS TO SEE THAT I WAS EATING OFF THE NEW SET OF BLUE WILLOW PLATES. IT WAS A BIRTHDAY GIFT FROM MY DAUGHTER AND HUSBAND. THAT GIFT MEANT SO MUCH TO ME AND TO REALIZE THAT MY FAMILY UNDERSTOOD WHAT THAT STORY MEANT TO ME. ALTHOUGH THIS IS PROBERLY NOT THE REVIEW YOU WERE LOOKING FOR, I FELT THIS WAS ONE TO SHARE BECAUSE IT STAYED WITH ME FOR OVER FORTY YEARS AND STILL DOES. I WILL BE GETTING THE BOOK REAL SOON. I KNOW FOR IT HAS COME UP AGAIN. SO EVERY TIME WE SIT DOWN TO EAT,I REMEMBER SO WELL,THAT WONDERFUL STORY AND THANKFUL FOR THE BLESSING OF A FAMILY THAT UNDERSTOOD. THIS STORY IS SO MUCH ALIVE IN MY HEART AND I KNOW IT WILL ALWAYS BE. I WOULD GIVE THIS BOOK MORE THAN FIVE STARS BUT YOU ONLY GO TO FIVE. BECAUSE ANY BOOK THAT CAN DO THIS FOR YOU AND LAST SO LONG AND ONLY BEEN READ ONCE I BELIEVE SHOULD BE MORE THAN A FIVE STAR HOWEVER THAT IS THE HIGHEST YOU OFFERED. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANY 9-12 YEAR TO READ THIS BOOK OR TO HAVE IT READ TO THEM.

I read this book in fourth grade and hated it. I am a junior now but my friends and I still mention the horrible torture this book brought us. PARENTS---- if you want to buy a book for your child, I don't suggest this one. It's about a girl and her plate....do i need to say more?

Even though it was a Newbery Honor book in 1941, I had never heard of this book before until I picked it up at a used book sale. The more I read it, the more I enjoyed it and wished that more books like it were being written today.

Janey Larkin is the girl who has to move to anther place following her father to work. When her mother is sick, the family must live at this place. She lives at Anderson¿s house. Bounce is a person who collects the rent but he did not give it to Anderson. Janey has a willow plate that she likes it a lot. On the plat, there is a picture of a bridge, a willow, three people and the Chinese house. She wishes that she would have a house like on the plate. One day, her mother is so sick and they do not have money, so she gives the willow plate to Bounce as the rent. After that Mr. Anderson and The Larkin found that Bounce defrauded them. Finally, Janey has a happy life like she wanted, when the family settled in that place of Mr. Anderson and he father get a job that was Bounce. I do not think I like this story because the subject matter is normal, nothing exciting. But, at least, this story teaches the reader to see the value of money, relationship between friends and relation in family. Actually, this book is good for children to know about reality of life.

I was suppose to read this book in three weeks but I read it in a night. It was about a girl who moves a lot and travels with a blue willow plate and says it better than sisters and brothers. Then she finally stays in one place and their mom is sick. They have no money and Bounce is telling them to move out or pay the rent. Actally Bonce isn't suppose to be doing this because he doesn't own the shack and is going against his boos . To know what happens read this book.

I liked the story because it was about another little girl my age. I have moved a lot too so I knew how she felt. I liked the part where she got to stay as long as she wanted and lived in a house. It told me about some kids that don't get a lot they want and need because they don't have enough money. The only thing I didn't like about it was is in some parts it was hard to understand.
