Overview

In song, the locomotive has been cast as a harbinger of death, as a steam-powered chariot to Heaven, as a symbol of American might and muscle, and, conversely, as a fading behemoth, lumbering through a fast-paced society that had little use for its plodding ways. Bluegrass and country artists, especially, have long celebrated the train in all its mythological and iconic grandeur, and 15 of those timeless tracts are collected on this wonderful collection. Bluegrass bands are particularly adept at evoking the rumble and roar of trains, and you don't even have to listen hard to hear a southern flyer bearing down on you when the Stevens Sisters rip through the high-octane tear-jerker "Lonesome Railroad," with the band's banjo-guitar-dobro axis suggesting the speed and relentless forward thrust of a big, smoke-belching engine chugging down the tracks. From a 1950 session, Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys (which then included Jimmy Martin and Vassar Clements) offer a somber, mid-tempo rendition of Bill Monroe and Hank Williams's "I'm Blue, I'm Lonesome," in which the heartbreak Williams describes in his lyrics is intensified by the distant, lonesome sound of a train whistle. Present is such classic fare as the Stanley Brothers' "Riding That Midnight Train" (in a rambunctious 1973 remake by Ralph Stanley), Elizabeth Cotten's enduring "Freight Train" (beautifully retooled for bluegrass by Jim & Jesse, circa 1977), and "The Wreck of The Old 97" (in a high-spirited, toe-tapping workout via Connie & Babe and the Backwoods Boys). Rhonda Vincent, Lynn Morris, Alecia Nugent, and Mountain Heart all chip in with young-guard takes on the timeless themes. No "Orange Blossom Special" or "Wabash Cannonball" here, but no matter: The steel rail could hardly be better honored than it is by Bluegrass Express.

All Music Guide - Ronnie D. Lankford
Rounder's 2004 compilation of traditional music offers something old, something new, and something blue. Bluegrass, that is. Bluegrass Express is yet another fine collection of songs about trains, and this one gathers together artists from the genre's foundation (Bill Monroe) to its most recent acts (e.g., Rhonda Vincent). Even with the variety of performers, the theme of trains and a traditional-based style of music gives Bluegrass Express a nice consistency. The oldest selection, "I'm Blue, I'm Lonesome" from Monroe & His Bluegrass Boys, remains stunning after 50 years. Joined by singer Jimmy Martin and fiddler Vassar Clements, Monroe delivers a lonesome vocal that reminds listeners of the raw power of early bluegrass. There are also selections from old-timers like Ralph Stanley, Jim & Jesse, and the Osborne Brothers. The young performers, though less inclined to sing it high and lonesome, fill out the collection with a fine group of songs. Rob Ickes, perhaps the biggest name next to Jerry Douglas on the Dobro scene, offers a spunky take on "Reuben." There are also selections from young-timers like Rhonda Vincent, the Stevens Sisters, and the Lynn Morris Band. So whether one is attracted to trains, bluegrass, or just good music, Bluegrass Express should fit the bill.
