This isn't exactly a bluegrass album, although it comes close, gathering tracks Roy Clark recorded in the 1970s for the Dot and ABC labels that are generally bluegrass in nature. Most of the tracks are from 1973's Roy Clark's Family Album and 1974's Family and Friends, with additional tracks drawn from Clark's two albums with banjo player Buck Trent, 1975's A Pair of Fives Banjos That Is and 1978's Banjo Bandits. Most of the tracks are from 1973's Roy Clark's Family Album and 1974's Family and Friends, with additional tracks drawn from Clark's two albums with banjo player Buck Trent, 1975's A Pair of Fives Banjos That Is and 1978's Banjo Bandits. Despite the different sources, the end result is a streamlined and cohesive sequence that features Clark and friends blasting through several Appalachian string band classics, including a wonderful version of the Carter Family's "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy" and a fiery take on "Old Joe Clark," as well as an interesting version of Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky," which starts in a slow to midtempo string band style before launching off into a bluegrass-velocity coda. Clark is first and foremost an entertainer, so he doesn't fret much about authenticity on these cuts, but races through them with his patented grin and a wink, and he's such a good player that it all works, even when he adds orchestral strings to "Dueling Banjos."
