Bluegrass Masters

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
The title doesn't lie -- this disc has 21 tracks by three of the best acts in the field Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and Jim & Jesse McReynolds, recorded live at the 1965 and 1966 Newport Folk Festivals. The sound and performances are good, and each act presents some familiar favorites -- the McReynolds offer "Dueling Banjos" and "Sugarfoot Rag," Monroe does "Shady Grove" and "Cotton-Eyed Joe," and Flatt & Scruggs play "Orange Blossom Special," "Foggy Mountain Chimes," and "The Ballad of Jed Clampett." A youthful Peter Rowan, then a guitarist with Monroe, does a duet vocal with the bandleader on "Walls of Time."
