Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Marc J. Kahn, MD (Tulane University School of Medicine)
Description: This is a review book of internal medicine for students and residents preparing to take USMLE Steps 2 and 3.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide high yield, accurate, clinical core content in the field of internal medicine. Because successful completion of the USMLE is required for licensure, the objective is worthy and this book meets these objectives.
Audience: The target audiences for this book are students and residents preparing for the USMLE Step 2 and 3.
Features: This book provides excellent boilerplate summaries of key topics in internal medicine. The chapters cover the breadth of interrnal medicine topics appropriate for students in their clinical clerkships and residents preparing for the USMLE. The book includes information on disorders found in both hospitalized and ambulatory patients. The book is up-to-date and contains useful diagrams and figures and some color photographs. Each chapter concludes with a key points section that highlights summary points that are frequently the topic of board questions. The book concludes with 89 practice questions with annotated answers. One criticism is that some of the questions are in the "all of the following EXCEPT" format which is not typically used by the USMLE.
Assessment: There are several other useful review books available for preparing for the USMLE. This book ompares favorably with others in this category and is a reasonable study tool for board preparation.
