Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: James J Mezhir, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This is an update of the classic "bible" of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, now with a new senior editor in William Jarnigan, chief of the HPB service at the center. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the diagnosis and treatment of all hepatic and pancreatic diseases treated by surgeons. This book is the only one of its kind in this field.
Audience: Students, residents, fellows, and surgeons with an interest or investment in the treatment of patients with hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases are the intended audience.
Features: There is no other book of this quality available with the expert descriptions of liver-directed operations or the management of patients with complex hepatobiliary diseases. This edition adds chapters on management of operative complications and minimally invasive techniques, as well as a new section on embryogenesis. The images are spectacular. There is also a complete online version, which makes this book especially attractive to users.
Assessment: This is a must-have for anyone who is interested in learning about or who treats patients with liver or pancreas disease. The updates and additions fully justify the new edition.
