When most people think of installation art, they assume it must be radical, abstract, and nearly incomprehensible. However, as a means of communication, it is unusually holistic and direct, and it is perhaps the oldest style of art, dating back to the Neolithic. Literally blurring boundariesof the viewer/viewed and of the materials usedinstallation art stimulates the total human being, making viewing a transformative process. Difficult as it is to collect such art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, has been doing just that for several decades. This catalog is a long-needed retrospective of exhibitions and permanent pieces held at the museum. Thanks to watchful curators such as Ron Onorato, the collection is full of now-classic works and important names from Robert Grosvenor and Vito Acconci to Bill Viola and Ann Hamilton.     three coins in a fountain

    This book encompasses some of the foremost designers in installation art. Robert Boger, being one of my favorites, has a nice piece that I was fortunate enough to see and this bok does an accurate presentation of his work, having me believe that many of the other artists are also well represented. Good Study, comprehensive.
