BMX Breakthrough (Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels Series)

Overview

It was just another day on the BMX street course for Billy Cruz. He lunged down the pipe, rode the ramp high into the air, and tweaked his bike for a perfect Superman — when suddenly he lost his grip on the seat. Cruz hit the concrete — hard — and wound up in the hospital with several broken bones. Six long weeks later, Billy finally got back on his bike. Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
The story starts with Billy having bad dreams about the upcoming competition. When he meets his friend Penny at the course he hangs back a little and she heads off by herself. He thinks about how their friendship evolved and is confused because she used to really bug him intentionally, but now seems to go out of her way to be nice. There is a flash back to the big competition, and when Billy was on the BMX course he raced down the ramp only to lose his grip on the seat and he fell on the concrete. He was taken to the hospital with several broken bones. The story then comes back to "today." Once he got back on his bike, he and his friends are in the finals and he missed his first three runs. His friend Penny then also stays off the high jumps and is playing safe also. The story gets very interesting and the reader learns a lot about friendship and determination. This is a well written graphic novel and is great for both boys and girls. The author includes discussion questions, a glossary, and mini biographies about the author and illustrator. I am glad to see that graphic novels are able to incorporate good character traits and having the main character learn valuable life lessons. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
