Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Renee Farrah Vess
Jason has a personal rule that he will always accept any dare offered to him. So when he insults a few BMX riders at school, he accepts their dare to enter a BMX race. Jason trains with his friend Stephen but starts to realize he may have been wrong; there is a lot of work and also a lot of fun involved with BMX riding. With the help of a notebook from Stephen's older brother, Jason gets a crash course in balancing techniques, endurance, and mastering the hole-shot. Jason has his share of embarrassing crashes and falls, but he always gets up to keep going toward the big goal—being a contender in the 12th Annual Dirt Cross. Jason's upbeat attitude throughout his whole ordeal gives him a clear mind on race day, and proves just how much of a good sport he and his challengers are. Illustrations are full page black, gray, and white with thick outlines. The back of the book contains a glossary of words used in the story, three discussion questions, three writing prompts, and a short history of BMX. A "Jake Maddox" sports story.
